I think the writers was hoping for a TV movie that's why they made such a decision for a bittersweet open ending. But the ending was obvious that Sarah wants to fall in love with him, doesn't really matter if she remember at all(I think she did for sure). Everything comes full circle which makes this ending more beautiful, after all these shit they went through they still together with different position, now Chuck is the one who's leading Sarah on this bright future.
