Not to be nitpicky but as a former aerospace engineer I'm here to tell you that getting "unexpectedly" caught in a star's gravity is something that happens precisely never. Sir Isaac Newton back in the 18th century could have done the math to tell you how fast you'd need to be going to avoid such a predicament. A culture with tech like the Union would never experience any difficulty.

Even being aware of the general sci-fi or even just regular drama tropes of trusting a femme fatale. Because this is in part a genre parody show. They purposefully lean into this cliché, for the nods and winks to it's forebears. Your reaction to the opening plot was expected. Then there's the time travel story parody on top. Perhaps it is meant to be more than a little messy as well. The conclusion doesn't make a whole lot of sense, as many time travel stories don't. A good old bootstrap paradox it isn't, imo. Knowing these elements, I still don't think it is executed all that well. It ends up being partly another device to repeat and continue the post divorce drama, in some ways. The practical joke chicanery isn't to be missed however.
