uchiha sealed their fate the moment they chose coup. The third could not have stopped them with words, though he wanted too. It wasn't the thirds fault. the uchiha would have died anyways, danzo just had itachi+obito do it. That saved the village from impending war. Go back and watch itachi revalation for more through explanation. The uchiha would have been slaughtered regardless but they would have been known traitors throughout the world.... which is in part why itachi himself killed them. To bring the curtain down on his own clan and to keep the uchiha name out of the mud.
