One of the issues with an active search system, be it radar or sonar, is that it relies on reflected energy. However the same level of energy will radiate out from the source to at least twice the maximum distance of detection. So the source is letting its presence be known long before it can hope to receive a signal back.

Q&A : I love the pagoda masts of the IJN, particularly Fuso and Yamashiro. Why go the route of the pagoda masts? Why were the IJN the only users of the magnificence that were the pagoda masts? Did the pagodas actually destabilize the ships balance? Can you discuss some of the more obscure deck levels and what they were used for?
