I suspect what the person wanted to know about the underway replenishment in the final question was if the USN approach was realistic to what the Germans (?) would have done.

Applying the same caveats you did to River Plate, 1927’s Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands is rather admirable. Uncannily appropriate that the films should be so similar, given the connections between the subjects. For overall authenticity of experience, rather than exact recreation of a single event, I think it’s tough to beat The cruel sea and Das Boot – another complementary pair, fittingly enough.
