URGENT: Potential Change of Intro Music

Ass some of you may have noticed, I've been having some trouble with the intro music recently. Whilst this music has been explicitly published copyright and royalty free by the artists Ender Guney via his free-music channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s00MEGYWsAU and via his prior channel which used to be linked in older videos, a Turkish Company known as Wedia Corp has recently started applying copyright strikes to videos using this music.

I've contacted them and explained that the artist has made it clear the music is free over multiple distribution methods (Soundcloud, YT, Spotify etc) but they refused to listen, demanded money and then stopped replying to emails when I pointed out that even if I were inclined to pay them, they had not said anything about how much they wanted or how they could be paid.

At first their bots were hitting only the videos I newly uploaded, but as of today they've gradually begun hitting other videos previously uploaded. As this represents about 6-700 videos that could gradually be hit over time, and given that each video earns no money between their strike and my challenge AND that they had so far rejected the challenge to the Midway video (which is why it has no intro) albeit they haven't acted on the other challenges yet, I may well be in the market for new intro music.

However, for existing videos, YT only offers the options of cutting out/muting the music or replacing it from their audio library. If this escalates I will likely need to replace the intro music on all older Wednesday and Saturday videos, but as mentioned I can only do that using YT's library, it doesn't seem to offer the option to upload my own music.

Therefore, I have used a some of their audio library to make some alternate versions of the intro section.

I will be posting a poll to determine which one(s) you think are better than the others.

And yes, I am seeking proper legal help over this as well.

A charitable organization to which I belong is now facing similar issues with an image that was being used as background content on the organization's webpage. Recently, a group of copyright troll attorneys reached out and are trying to shake down the organization for a settlement.

This kind of thing really annoys me that YT don't have a better way of dealing with this oppourtunistic bullshit.

I always loved the score from "Victory at Sea".

I don’t suppose you could use the opening music to Tora Tora Tora? 😂

Rodney McCoy

Yamamoto likes the first one. I say GO WITH NUMBER FOUR OR FIVE!

"then stopped replying to emails when I pointed out that even if I were inclined to pay them, they had not said anything about how much they wanted or how they could be paid." Making it clear the money they were after was everything from your views.

Drach, if you haven’t found a lawyer yet, I know some very good intellectual property lawyers in the UK. I also know some in Turkey…

Thilo Agthe

Sounds like a pfishing sort of attack, or maybe closer to ransomware. Either way, a scummy scam. Hope your legal help gives the turkeys in Turkey a good thrashing

Marlin Stout

Well you'll have my axe .. and money

Reichsbierminister

Very sorry to hear this Drach, a bit ordinary and no mistake. Best of luck resolving it. Sorry I don't have any "heavies" in Turkey I can "send around" to help get things sorted!

My four cents: 1. When I created my intro music to my YouTube videos, the web site where I obtained my royalty free music told me I had to credit the music in my description, plus somewhere in the video itself. (Example below). This way the artist gets the credit and sees that it's being applied in a royalty free way. 2. This vendor may have a paying customer who has now utilized your open sourced music for a paid purpose. Thus viewing it as part of their branding. Now if they are paying for this open source, per whatever license it falls under, then they are within their right to defend the branding they are creating. 3. It seems that your music selection is open source; however, you don't really properly source it in your description, plus there are no sound credits at the end. You may try and see if just adding the properly sources URL in the description plus at the end of your video may solve your problem. It's worth a shot? 4. You may also need to look at what the license stipulates. You may now have enough viewership and/or money flowing in that it falls into commercial use, which may require you to pay fees if you don't properly site the work. Example of how I site my music in the Description and Ending Credits. The following music was used for this media project: Music: Seven Seas by Alexander Nakarada Free download: https://filmmusic.io/song/7540-seven-seas License (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-license Artist website: https://www.serpentsoundstudios.com/

This makes me angry, very angry. However, the content is so good it really doesn't need the intro music, just roll right into the video sans the musical appetizer.

Maybe the lawyer can get a cease and desist order against the trolls, and then demand (sue?) YouTube to block identified trolls?

John McCarthy

I was going to suggest the Victory at Sea theme as well. That might work for future videos, but it doesn't help for the old ones...

John McCarthy

How about using "Ride ofthe Valkyries" as your intro?

Capitano Lorenzo

Copyright trolls are the new 21st century Mafia. Maybe you can scrap together money and comision some music that you own all the rights to?

Brian Reddeman

Copyright trolls are fucking awful. This sucks man.

Charles Fitt

You could use the music they are running on the UNAUTORIZED HISTORY OF THE PACIFIC WAR PODCAST? Ask Seth and Bill maybe. It's a nice tune.

frank bodenschatz

Sounds like the same concept used by patent trolls. Claim to own something and demand money. Either you buy them off, or you pay your lawyer to fight them off. Either way you end up paying. This copyright business also shows the downside of attempting to automate administrative tasks on social media. AI and such is only so good, and it often can't simulate common sense or other subjective judgements.

Sylderon Machine Works

Can you add timestamps between the five tracks on this video Drach? It would help in choosing between two choices side by side.

Robert Hilton

I don

Okay. I've been mulling over doing a variation of Robert Russell Bennett's, ' 'Victory At Sea'- specifically the intro to the series. The violins replicating the swelling of the ocean waves is invocative. However, the music needs to pay homage to the intro you've had all along. Gimme a few days to work out a score for you.

Vintage Car History

He's more than welcome to join in.

Um, Ryan Szymanski will be PISSED that you didn't include the New Jersey...!

TC Pratt

What? All I watch the videos for is the music. 😜 Seriously tho you could have robo voice recite the Wellerman and we'd all still watch.

Kazoo is the way to go. Record your own music.

Kevin Kennelly

That's set my blood boiling that these scammers can take advantage of YouTube's copyright protection system like that and the platform either won't do anything about it or will move so slowly on it as to make no difference. The classic intro music fits so well, and is so well timed to the footage that all the other options seem jarring. That said, I do like the fifth piece if we need to make a change. On a side note, this is the first time I've heard the 'Drachinifel Theme Music - Extended Version' as I'd call it, and I'm fascinated that the music continues on past the point where the intro normally ends.

Screw it. Lets borrow the Missouri to visit the Turkish gov't and let them fix it. Good video for two channels. Fun for all. I can cover the helm or radios.

You’re not the first to have this issue with public domain music. And YT is as apathetic as ever in such cases.

Texas Anla'Shok

From what I gather this organisation has been applying copyright strikes to a lot of successful sites, including people who are only presenting their own music. If they were anything other than a bunch of charlatans (other descriptions may be applied) they would be offering payment to those whose copyright they have usurped or stolen, but no such payment is being offered (let alone paid), but they have withdrawn one or two of the strikes.....

Rob Smith

That's infuriating. I'm sorry you're dealing with this issue.

I always skip the intro (to 32 seconds). Sorry to hear there's a new way to troll creators. I'm glad I don't use music on my channel.

That sounds suspiciously like a scam to me.

Nozdormu89

Oh the joys of the international electronic age. 🧌👎 Enjoy your postings so much, you could put kazoo or free form bagpipes and I would still watch / listen!!
