In the early centuries of Christianity, there was a strong belief that individuals had a direct inner connection to the divine—sometimes referred to as the "divine spark" within. Each person was seen as having a unique path to awakening. Authority came from within, not from a priest. Individual spiritual autonomy was threatening to power structures. The Church needed to standardize belief to avoid heresy and schism. So they replaced personalized spiritual paths with generalized doctrines, like "sin" (something that can be measured, punished, forgiven, controlled) and the need for priests and bishops to be intermediaries. This made the Church the sole gatekeeper of salvation—a powerful position politically, spiritually, and economically.
