During the period of 1880-1913 Have there been any privately owned ocean going warships? I know prior to this time period in the age of sail merchants would carry cannon but at some point this appears to have stopped. No pirates? Laws preventing mercenary warships? Sheer cost of owning anything more than a sloop with a machinegun?

Happy Belated New Year, Drach. What was the reason for post WWI RN cruisers having such a high freeboard compared to cruisers for other navies? I assume part of it was better seakeeping in the rough waters of the Atlantic, but didn't this also make the ship easier to spot by the enemy, particularly enemy submarines? With 20/20 hindsight, would it have better to have the high freeboard and better seakeeping and speed or would it have been better to have a smaller hull lines and less prominent stacks?

Drach - during the age of sail, routine, preventative maintenance for the vessel was no doubt substantial and tough going. In the hierarchy of time consuming maintenance items, where did the sails fall? What about moist or wet climates? How was rot of the fabric stopped or mitigated?

The Drydocks are highlights of my week. Yes, I love the ship videos, but the Drydock goes into more detail. I shudder to think of how much research is needed.
