Was it your English politeness that kept you from commenting on the effectiveness of Admiral Halsey when asked about the effectiveness of Admiral Halsey and Admiral Beatty? You could tell me that the two were cousins and I would believe it. Had things been only slightly different (and perhaps as they ought to go 39 times out of 40), Halsey would have invited an American slaughter that would have dwarfed the British losses at Jutland and been a perpetual black mark on the USN--to say nothing of sailing his fleet through a typhoon for no particularly obvious reason. Naturally, like Beatty, he was promoted after such misgivings because of course he was . . .
