Ironically the "tree bursts" that they noticed when they got back to their position had likely come from Allied artillery. Unbeknownst to front line soldiers, the Americans had developed a proximity fuse that made tree bursts much more likely to happen, and it was about this time that it started being used with ground forces. The artillery they get hit by from the Germans is rightly seen exploding on impact with the ground or direct hits on trees. On the plus side, that meant that most of the shrapnel was coming from ground level or direct hits, rather than from bombs exploding above you and raining shrapnel down from above into your foxhole. Very few limbs were reattached during WWII. There was too much need and not enough time or doctors that could have managed it.
