Correct about the M mark on the forehead, indicating that the patient had morphine, so that they weren't accidentally given an overdose. The falling snow is most likely a pyrotechnic special effect that was used by the filming company, called a "snow candle". It makes lots of fine ash that flies around like snow flakes falling. As to the claim that the 101st was "rescued" by Patton... the 101st felt that they really just opened up the supply lines that Patton and the rest of the Allies had been unable to keep open, and that if they HAD to they would have been able to hold on as long as one guy still had bullets. They just needed supplies... not a "rescue"... but in the end it is just two military units trying to claim victory and bragging rights. On the subject of the "Christmas Present" - it was the Germans demanding a surrender, and an American General telling him "screw you"... given that most generals were perceived of as being elitists and "gentlemen", the image of them telling the Germans to bugger off was as good a present as they could get, given that nobody had supplies for an actual "present".
