I get that episode 3 may not have felt like it gave a lot to the Joel\Ellie story but it really filled out a lot of the universe missed in the game. As was mentioned by Jayson this show is very close to the game itself but the game left a lot of questions to the community that they tried to answer\expand on\adjust in the show. I can't speak for other people but for me they really did I great job of filling out the universe for me in a way I love. A fun bit of trivia... the guy from KC with long beard and rifle(Percy... he plays Kathleen's 2nd in command) was the voice actor for Joel's brother Tommy in the game.

Craig Mazin, a writer for the show enjoyed the use of Ellie's joke book in the game and felt its inclusion in the series allowed effective development between her and Joel. Ellie finding that magazine is also from the game lol In the episode, Kansas City replaces Pittsburgh as seen in the game. Craig Mazin found the production locations in Canada more closely imitated Kansas City and felt Pittsburgh was not important enough to the story to justify the difficulty in manufacturing it. Co-creator Neil Druckmann, considered it a superficial change as the characters are more important than the location. He and Mazin felt the additional distance to Kansas City justified the story beats and character development. Some game mechanic references: Joel needs to help Ellie crawl through a small window, so she can open the door from the other side. This is a game mechanic players are familiar with because Joel would have to boost Tess and Ellie up to high places, so they can drop him a ladder or find an alternate path. In the game, many doors and openings are blocked by filing cabinets of some sort that Ellie or Joel have to push out of the way to enter specific rooms or buildings. This is referenced in this episode when a similar filing cabinet is blocking the door for Joel which both he and Ellie push out of the way.
