Somewhere Out There (Chorus)

...Somewhere out there? How right here, this beautiful guitar lesson you're able to check out?

This song is probably #1 for the most different guitar approaches in one song. There's some rock n roll guitars, some shredding, some vibey slide guitar, and some funky strumming. It's the funky strumming that we'll be looking at today.

Basically, you'll be taking these 2 rhythms and applying them to a long progression of chords:

1   e   &   a   2   e   &   a   3   e   &   a   4   e   &   a
x   x   x    >  x    x   x   >    x   x   >   >   x   x    x   x

1   e   &   a   2   e   &   a   3   e   &   a   4   e   &   a
x   x   x    >  x    x   x   >    x   x   >   x   >   >   >   >

The chords are:

Dmaj - Bmin - Emin - A11 - F#m - Cdim - Bmin - Em7 - A11

Long chord progressions  like this aren't very common in western popular music. Most western pop songs use around 4 chords. But a lot of Japanese music like city pop uses a ton. We're inspired by a lot of that music, so sometimes that influence shows itself in our tunes with these long journeying chord progressions.

I'm using 3 note shapes, which are incomplete on their own and are typically part of a larger arrangement with the full band.  Not everyone needs to be battling to play the full chord all the time, as long as everyone's parts collectively add up to complete the chord.

The chord shapes themselves are fairly common, and if you've been keeping up to date on these lessons then many of them might even look familiar to you by this point!

Take your time with these, go slowly and pay attention to the details. Drop any questions down below! TAB is attached.

Ohhh I can totally hear the citypop vibes! Very good :D This is the song that made me want to get a slide--I haven't yet but the temptation grows stronger every time I see y'all play

I know you’ve been at it for a few millennia but it’s incredible that you can do that while looking in the total opposite direction. Didn’t even peek once!
