Baby, NYC (Pre-chorus)

Hello Phibbilings!

Here's a Van Halen-y kinda part for you all. These tight palm muted parts high on the neck with a a nice crunchy tone really gets you into that territory where you think "Oh yeah, it's that sound"

The trick with these palm mutes is getting the right palm placement, so you'll want to experiment here. You want your palm to be as close as possible to the bridge, but then apply a little bit more pressure than you normally would when palm muting. For some reason this sounds a little more Van Halen-y to me than other ways of palm muting. But YMMV, so again definitely experiment!

For this one you'll be playing in the 9th position. It's like you're playing an E major chord, in the 'G position'. Just leave out the bottom 2 strings and you're there.

Keep your first finger barred on this 9th fret while you add in the other notes with your 2nd and 3rd finger. Don't lift your 1st finger when you do this, keep it down!

The chords are cool here, because although the guitar is playing an E major arp more or less, the bass begins on an F# bass note. These 2 things combine to make an F#m11 chord - noice! The bass then switches to an A note and the guitar stays on the E major arp. These 2 things combine to make an Amaj9 chord - very noice!

The guitar and bass together are what really makes the part, in fact Meouch and I wrote this on our very first visit to NYC many many years ago!

I definitely hear the Van Halen here :D My first trip to NYC was a school trip when I was 13, and we went to a late performance on Broadway and walked back to the hotel in the dark with the city all lit up and still bustling with people--this totally could've been the soundtrack for it. Great memories!
