Pets (Chorus)

This part is frantic. I admit that after watching this video on loop for a few minutes to gather my thoughts, my heart rate has sped up. I'm also drinking a lot of coffee today - WOO!

So, what is going on with this one?

(TAB is attached as a PDF and Guitar Pro file)

...

Approach:

This is basically a David Williams inspired part. He played a ton of guitar for MJ and Madonna. His playing is characterized by funky single note parts.  I'm not even half as funky, but we did turn up the tempo very high on this track which gives it a unique rushed and frantic sense of time.

The Breakdown:

This part comes from a G minor blues scale, which looks like this:

---------------------------------3-6---
----------------------------3-6--------
--------------------3-5-6-------------
---------------3-5--------------------
-------3-4-5--------------------------
--3-6---------------------------------

I take the 3rd fret on the 2nd string, and move it down to its equivalent on the 3rd string - the 7th fret. Most of this riff happens on the middle 2 strings, so what we're working with now is:

-------------------
-------------------
-------3-5-6-7----
--3-5-------------
-------------------
-------------------

You now have raw ingredients (the bread 🍞 and potatoes πŸ₯”) which make up this delectable riff. There is one note at the very end which breaks outside of this - but I am  allowed to break the rules which I create! I will not apologize for this rogue note.

Other Tips:

- Alternate pick plz!
- Strat for spanky tone - but of course any guitar works.
- For the run 5 - 6 - 7, use fingers 2, 3, and 4. Then you'll use finger 1 to play the 3rd fret.

...

Please promise me you'll have fun with this. Drop any comments or questions below.

Enjoy!

I know this is tagged as intermediate, but I've been able to do the parts I dedicate myself to. Including the Synth Her chorus, but the sheer speed and precision this part requires is fucking nuts to me. I will get this down one day! If it's the last guitar part I play!

WOO! Catching up on all of these before my subscription runs out, and it's guitar overload! so much, but in the best way possible

I'm embarrassed to admit I've never been able to bring myself to listen to this song. I put my whole heart into loving my pets, and when I lose them I take it really hard.

Never thought of that, but that's an interesting analysis. Personally, I've always imagined a bunch of frantic kittens running around and playing.

That part certainly is frantic, will try my best! Thanks again for the stream yesterday! It was really interesting hearing what each guitar is like right after each other.

Krissy

I always liked this part in the song. It provides a great contrast to the legato melody in the chorus. To me, it represents how your heart races and your emotions are constantly going up and down despite displaying a cool and calm exterior. Brilliant!

Phoboshop was a blast yesterday! Thanks for the great time.

I'm glad you enjoyed that! It was a fun time indeed.

George was too pure for this world!

Never ever apologize for breaking the rules! :D That's the spice on the potatoes of life. Thank you for the stream yesterday, teach! I absolutely adore when you just start telling us stuff about some aspect of guitar or music in general, so it was probably my favorite stream you've done to date.

I’d like to dedicate this riff to my childhood cat, Tigger. May he Rest In Peace.

I’d like to dedicate this riff to my childhood fish, George. May he Rest In Peace.
