Groove Crusaders (Chorus)

Good afternoon!

Today we visit Groove Crusaders off of Guardians of the Zone. The TAB is attached as Guitar Pro and PDF file.

This part is kind of like a more rock n roll Michael McDonald keyboard part on the guitar. His playing tends to take any chord, and alternate between 2 different shapes in a rhythmic pattern. When the chord changes, so do the 2 shapes. This is what I did here, except on electric guitar of course, sprinkled with a bit more distortion.

So, below I've written each chord in the progression, and the two shapes which correspond to it. All of these 2 note shapes are typically called "double stops" or "dyads". Please note that the rhythm which it changes between the two varies for each chord. Here I'm just showing the 2 different shapes to help keep track of them all and make it more digestible. For the full breakdown, check the attached TAB.

C minor:

--------
-4--3--
-3--3--
--------
--------
--------

Bb major:

--------
-3--1--
-3--2--
--------
--------
--------

D major:

-------
-3--1-
-2--2-
-------
-------
-------

There are two chords at the end which do not alternate between two shapes:

G minor:

-------
--3----
--3----
-------
-------
-------

F major:

-------
--1----
--2----
-------
-------
-------

After some repetition and some glorious moment spend groovin', the chorus ends on some power chords:

----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
--5---6---7------7------7-------------
--3---4---5------5------5-------------
-----------------------------------------

That's the main meat and potatoes of the part. It is on you to season it correctly by paying attention to the correct rhythm as well as playing accurately.

Enjoy,

Comments

Good call. The album If That's What It Takes has some good hits!

Thanks for another lesson, guitar man! I think I might look up some Michael McDonald stuff today. I'm feelin' that vibe today. Hope you're havin' a good one!

All praise galactic yacht rock.

Oh, this made me grin as soon as the notes hit my ears! It's just so confident and upbeat that you immediately feel like everything's gonna be just fine. How could it be anything else, when you've got your best friends by your side? :) I've always loved Groove Crusaders for that reason--it perfectly encapsulates a lot of what I adore about TWRP's vibe! Thanks for the post, teach, and have a good one!
