Time to Shine (2nd Section)

Hello everybody!

Next up is Time to Shine, 2nd Section.

PS - If you ever decide to post a video of yourself playing one of these riffs on Instagram - who knows, maybe I'll just have to repost it! Honestly, I would also love to see how you're all doing with all these riffs. @lord.phobos

Pro Tips:

- This is pretty loose, but palm mute if you'd to. I think it enhances the slightly groovy detective feel. Sometimes I won't palm mute the very last note to help make it pop a bit more. If you're not comfortable palm muting yet, just play the notes open. That's fine too!

- I play the 7th fret with my first finger, and the 9th with my 4th finger. But you can play the 9th with your 3rd finger if you want. Either way works, but one way is going to feel more comfortable than the other depending on the size of your hands.

- I recommend down-picking every note, to keep the volume of each consistent and powerful.

Theory Talk:

This riff comes from an extended B minor pentatonic scale shape. It consists of these notes:

B - D - E - F# - A

I've attached another TAB with this scale shape translated onto the guitar neck. You might look at it and realize there's more than 5 notes in the TAB - that's because each of these 5 notes repeat 3 times when ascending the scale, each time in a higher octave! While the full scale is pretty big - I only use a small chunk of it in this riff.

I recommend taking the time and memorizing this shape. It's one of the most useful and highly used patterns for guitarists everywhere. I've used it to write a lot of music, and it's also a go-to pattern when improvising.

The bass doubles this riff on guitar. So if you have a bass, you can easily copy these notes over. Having the guitar and bass double each other is a great technique when you want things to sound simple, punchy, and thick.

TABs are attached as a PDF and Guitar Pro file.

Delightful treats every time I get back to checking Patreon ^______^ Thanks as always Red-Ranger! And the new helmet design is pretty baller' too btw d00d! (Any light you can shed on the reason and/or influences going int to that update at all?) :D

Thanks for checking out the page! If you download the TABs, there's standard notation as well so you can learn it on another instrument, no problem!

Try practicing that slide by repeating it over and over. You'll get it eventually!

Hi Lord Phobos! New member here! I'm excited to join the party! I don't currently play guitar, but I love music theory and I love nerding out about it with other music nerds. Stay groovy! And congrats on the swanky new armor!

I'm struggling with this too. I found a youtube vid today by Rachelf called "How to Palm Mute" that helped me some. Hope it helps you too!

Krissy

Simple, Punchy and Thick is the name of my three-woman band Ive decided. Hell yeah I’m gonna pull out my bass and flub this so hard!! Thanks for the tip!! Also congratulations on your face my dude!!

Dezzi

This is a ton of fun to play! No idea how to slide that far that fast, if that's what the 11th fret note is, but that's okay. Have a rockin week!

Krissy

It certainly is a mood. Thanks!

Shiniest year yet!

I guess I gotta start utilizing IG more with that offer on the table. 2020 we all shine

Another great vid! This is my favorite part of the song, I sing along with it every time.

KazultheDragon

you are truly spoiling us Phobos

Groovy detective feel, love it! I’m just wondering if you could explain how palm muting works to me. I have very little experience playing guitar. You seem to use it a lot to get a specific tone to the notes. I think I understand the theory of it, you just don’t let the full notes ring out? It’s more mechanically how do you achieve this that I am not totally grasping. Hope all is well! The new armor looks good!

Excellent! “Groovy detective” is a whole mood, reminds me of a friend’s old DnD character :) Thanks for the post, guitar man! Love the new look btw, can’t wait to see it in person next month :D
