BETCHA CAN'T PLAY THIS! (But I hope you can)
Here's a tricky one for all you funksters in the audience!
A little bit about the part:
There's a call-and-response thing happening between the single note phrases and the chordal phrases in this part. I'm playing them together here, but in the studio we actually split it up and tracked it as 2 separate guitar parts. If you listen carefully to the recording you'll hear that even the tones are different. If I remember correctly, we used a Strat for the single note stuff and a Tele for the chords.
On top of this, there's also a third guitar shredding some arpeggios.
Someday I will have some of my guitar shredding twins Phobert, Phobis, or Phrederick join us live to handle all these overdubs, but for now I try and pick the most important part to play live. In this case, it's this funky little bit right here.
Pro-Tips:
One thing to be mindful of is the guitar 'scratching'. In between actual notes, you'll notice my right hand makes percussive sounds, kind of like a drum. This is just a little "riff enhancer" used to make things sound more rhythmic and percussive. You can practice it by lightly touching your left hand on all 6 strings, lightly enough so you're not fretting any notes, but firm enough so that no open strings right out. All you want to hear is a muted scratching type of sound. Now start strumming back and forth with your right hand, and you will suddenly sound like a funk-wizard.
Tabs are available for download as a Guitar Pro file or a PDF!
