Progress update for 26-06-2022

Heya all! So, this week was filled with bugfixes (those never really end do they) and plenty of writting. I'm at the point where I think that I can plot the release for mid-juli, if all things go well. The game is in an excellent state and got so much new content that I feel its pretty ready for that.

Besides that I actually worked a bit on a bit of an R&D project. Some of you might've seen this on my twitter:

You see, in the past I've worked as a 3D artist and as a hobby I also made stuff like that. This week I did some research into whether I could use these kind of assets for the game; they can be quickly made, and would allow for far more poses.

The problem however, is style. The game has a definitive vibe going for it that I always try to maintain; slice of life and down to earth, but not too serious. Soviets' art has been amazing for it, in that it really gives the style I'm going for.

But, it should be possible to recreate such a style in 3D, right?  The problem is the effort involved. After about spending 30 hours working on this, I got to the conclussion that making these assets was actually going to be harder than doing the art due to inflexibility of 3D assets. A 2D artist can change their assets, without having to adjust other assets. But in 2D, everything is connected. I'd have to make seperate 3D models for every bodytype, setup render styles, do it for the NPC's...

So despite it being a really interesting case study, it didn't go anywhere. And perhaps this was a bit boring to read, but I thought it interesting to also show a failed project for once. And I'm curious what you all think; does it spring any new ideas? And do you think 3D renders like that could actually fit the game? Let me know!

Comments

I can't really point out a concrete reason, but the 2D art really ties the game together, there is just something about the style of it that fits so well.

Same, I'm a big fan of Soviet's style for this game. It seems to fit it perfectly.

I agree that SovietMarmalade's art is perfect for the game. Maybe 3D could be something for your next, even more ambitious project? ;)
