Yeah, episode 1 was good. But it's more about character introductions. Things begin to piece together better after these early intros. This episode was so good. Answering questions from episode 1 and I can honestly say things are clearer. Is it me or is there something romantic gonna happen between John and Mariko? My early prediction.

Regarding the assassin, the next episode tells more about these types of assassins. Lady Ochiba, who is the mother of the heir, was a concubine of the late leader (Taiko). She and Toranaga had some romantic history as alluded to by the Taiko. Toranaga's daughter-in-law is Lady Ochiba's sister. So when Toranaga's daughter-in-law went into labor in Edo, Lady Ochiba went there to help. The regents used this as a pretext to take Toranaga as hostage in Osaka because they assumed, or wanted to make it seem, that Lady Ochiba was taken hostage in Edo. The division of the "new world" between Portugal and Spain did happen and legal documents were signed to that effect (Treaty of Tordesillas). I remember this from our history classes growing up in the Philippines.
