A fun Discovery!!

Hello!

We just stumbled upon something while remodeling the kitchen and I wanted to share it with you right away!

While chipping away at a wall we uncovered 8 unusual pipes (Five coming from above and three coming from below) all terminating at the same height in the kitchen...

Which means there WAS an amazing servant bell system in the house and several of the rooms still have their call buttons!

So I won't be able to tackle this right this second, but I am mapping out a plan to restore this back to a functioning state and I just thought you would think this uncovering was neat!

I hope you're doing well! I'm up to all kinds of mischief over here :))

Love it can't wait to see it in action. I've seen those in a lot of mysteries and period films and shows. Im not sure but perhaps in Gosford Park and maybe one or two Agatha Christie Mysteries

Mrs. Jennifer Lynn Smith-Clark

That’s fantastic! Can’t wait for you to finally unveil that finished system.

Our house was built in the 1890s when the Columbian Exposition World's Fair caused our neighborhood on the south side of Chicago to boom. We have a servant's bell in the hallway that connects to the kitchen. The call button is on the floor under where you put a dining room table. No longer working, but still so neat! We were able to access the historical records for our home (Chicago has great records) and found the servant's name. She was from Sweden! Even though the house was built with a servant's area and a bedroom in the basement for one (the old gas light fixture is still there!), the neighborhood changed quickly and the home ever only had the one servant. We are the fifth owners and we know the history of everyone who lived here. Fortunately most of our gorgeous original 1890s features were preserved over the years. We are lucky!
