Marble Mantle Restoration & Craft Room Painting - From the Mind of Christine McConnell
Added 2024-06-30 15:05:02 +0000 UTC
In this episode I strip 100 years of paint and stains off of a victorian mantle and create an ombre effect on the walls and ceiling of my new craft room!
One thing I absolutely love about your videos is that you share your expertise, but also share cool and useful things you learn when trying something new. It's such a great blend!

I look forward to seeing the mantle with the gold. Im not sure but gold leafing might be a better call though.

I thought you had done a stunningly awesome faux marble finish!
We know someone who professionally faux finishes!
My husband featured her recently in our efforts to restore our home!

I second the blowing bubbles idea I have seen it done on Raku fired pottery and looks similar. Or maybe a controlled heat (like a blow touch of some kind) to manipulate the paint before it dries

The marbling could have been achieved using the blowing bubbles technique

If you're a fan of Cabana and/or Studio Peregalli they highlight and use these techniques/artisans ... reminiscent of Renzo Mongiardino.

There's a series of books called 'surfaces' by Judy Juracek. When I was in theater undergrad this was the go to for any research about finishes or, well, surfaces.
Pre-internet they were invaluable. Basically, large coffee table size books with 2" square clear color pictures of anything you would even need to paint or draw in a scene shop.
You might find that marble technique in one of those.
(Scene painting 3, which I never progressed to, involved a drawing of a section of marble column, frieze, pediment etc and one of those images, to be painted shadows and all. Scene painters are amazing, I was a lowly prop artisan. Anyhow, I hope this is interesting if not helpful.)

I've never understood why someone would paint over marble. You are a modern-day Remembrant with that paintbrush, ma'am! The highlights and lowlights on your medallion just set it off to perfection, it looks like it's always been there!

The last layer looks like cobweb met lace LOL I do love it 😻 (I believe from what I can remember from way [way] back when, they might have used dish soap and the soap makes the paint float and creates holes. I don't know the actual technique but it looks a lot like that method.)

You might try a fluffy ostrich feather to create the veining on the faux marble. I’ve seen people using goose feathers but they don’t create that delicate veining.

Have you looked into the library in the house? There could be a diary that mentions the redecoration of the room, why it was done, or note materials. (I’d guess the faux marble was part of a project with the birds.) And failing that, there might be an art book with mention of techniques.

You were wondering about that spider-webby marbling technique - I think maybe they pulled/stretched apart some wool batting, dabbed it with paint and then pressed it on the mantel. You could try it with polyester batting to see if it works. I loved watching you transform the room with high/low light paint colors and the ombre effect - you would be a great set decorator. But I guess that's actually what you do!

That "marble" painting method you uncovered.. it looks like "bubble painting." You combine dish soap, paint and water, You dip a straw, or a bubble wand with multiple openings, into the mixture and blow bubbles onto the surface. When the bubbles pop, it leaves a pattern just like the one you showed.

This was such a beautiful process to watch. I get so lost within each video, like I am transported to a different era with an old friend. Thank you Christine, for igniting so much fire in my artistic mind! I used to watch your Netflix show when I was pregnant, daily! Now my son indulges in it and at 2.5 he loves saying hello to the characters and hearing him say “oh hi, Cwistine!” Is the highlight of my morning! 🤍 hugs xx

Beautiful! As far as lightening up the the stone (or whatever you need to in the future), another technique you can try is using a hydrogen peroxide gel (I believe there's one called Retrobrite). You can spread it on, put cellophane on it, and then hit it with a UV light to speed up the bleaching process. I've seen 8-Bit Guy on youtube use this technique to restore old computers that have yellowed.

I bet, somewhere, there's an old paint technique book or pamphlet from a paint company out there on eBay or something, that details how they did that marble technique.
