Restoring Youth with Photoshop - From the Mind of Christine McConnell

Comments

My pandemic project, which is still a work in progress, is digitizing and organizing my family's photos. I am so grateful to whoever in the past actually wrote on the back of them, as having names and dates is so helpful, and exciting. For the other photos which don't have any information, and for my own photos, I am writing on the back as much information as I can. Including, sometimes, something about why the photo was taken so there is context.

You have such amazing patience! What lovely work. Photoshop is the gold standard, but it's wickedly costly, especially if you don't need it for your job. An excellent, more affordable option is Affinity Photo. I switched to Affinity Photo, Designer, and Publisher to replace Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Design respectively. Amy Mullen

Same!

Kathryn

Wow! Can you do this for me? 😲 So cool!

Angie

I was a communications major in college with an emphasis in advertising (I was and still am bewitched by old print advertisements from the 40's and 50's...RIP print these days). In a lot of my classes we had to use Photoshop. I squeaked by in my classes because my brain simply could not wrap itself around Photoshop! I drew a lot of ad visuals and had decent copywriting skills, but I'll be damned if Photoshop didn't trip me up every time! I marvel at anyone who can master such a complicated program. If you can command that I'm convinced you could also fly a spaceship to the moon. XD As a side note the transformation of the photos are as stunning as they are beautifully respectful, and also the frames are gorgeous! My husband knows I always have to pick the frames for any art displayed in our home...my OCD brain will not rest if it's not right! XD

Jenny McKinsey

They look so amazing. Your talent with the hair alone! I do the Captive's reverse image trick too. I will often hold a drawing or painting up to a mirror to catch any way my eye might be playing a trick on me.

Anne Z Knight

My son and I watched this were fascinated. He said he'd love to see you take a picture of yourself and age it. I think that's a cool idea so I told him I'd pass it on :)

Rebecca Phelps

Past picture framer here too and I second those tools. However, you have to be careful with using a point driver on antique frames. Those things can have a kick and can cause damage to delicate frames. ATG tape is great and the dispenser is fun to use! One thing I'd add to these tips is using glass that has been treated with a UV protective coating to prevent fading. You can buy pieces cut to the size you need at any frame shop.

Lynnetta

Wow that was amazing!! Thank you

Martha Soria

“ these pictures give this room a special touch” she says as she hangs them amongst the 30odd special touches already there lol. I’m teasing you…this was outstanding. An absolute joy to watch. I would be so keen for the photoshop livestream/tutorial session you mentioned. X

Wow! If the original owners of the house still come to visit now and again, I bet they're really happy with how you made them look in their portraits! Perhaps he said to her, 'There's the girl I fell in love with'. You made him look so dashing (he kind of reminds me of The Captive a bit!) Great job as always!

Tammy R Dowden

What a wonderful tribute to the original owners of your house! It's so heartwarming. When you described that one does not need knowledge of anatomy when tackling such a project and your brain will just tell you what looks right... that's not it. It's talent. I think it's really sweet that you say things like this because I believe you don't fully grasp the extend of your many talents and think anyone can do it. What you have is so special and unique and you are so humble about it. 🥹❤️

Liv marvin

always learning from you. Thank you for this episode ❤. Christine, I would love to know more about frames and restoring them 😊. I see that to get an old frame the price is a little high or they are not always in good condition.

Maria L.

Thank you, Angela!

Krystina Steed

Does anyone know if this year’s postcard got sent out?

Marina salinas

De-age me! Can Photoshop to that? Its's fun to watch you at work. I would totally tune into a live Photoshop Q&A, Show and Tell. Beautiful job with the Richardsons. I think their ghosts are happier now.

Racheal Jones

It's a Wacom Cintiq

Angela Pogue

Christine what did the relative that let you scan the pic think of the end result? I know they would be so proud to see what you did!

Jess

What kind of tablet are you using to design with?

Krystina Steed

How long did it take you to master PS? I know you mentioned it was awhile but wow.

Christopher Troy

Very interesting. And I like the new pieces of music the Captive invented!

Emy AUBIN

This was so helpful Brandon! Thank you! :D

Christine McConnell

I wish I could just get you to do some work for me. I've tried photoshop in the past. I just never could get it all figured out!

Jess

Very fun project. I’m new to photoshop but would love to try something similar. I think you’ve given the young Mr Richardson a dash of the captive. Also, I was a picture framer for several years in college. Glazing points are better than nails, but if you frame a lot, I recommend a Framer’s Point Driver instead. Much easier to use. Papering the back is standard finishing practice, but a less glue-dependent way would be to use a Scotch ATG tape dispenser to line the edges with double sided framers tape and then lay your paper onto that. Just a couple tools of the trade to make the process a tad easier. 🖤

Brandon Grew

I LOVE this idea!!

Christine McConnell

First peep portraits, now de-aging… I foresee a future ep where you create your own Picture of Dorian Gray where you have a dashing portrait in the main space and a sinister and decrepit version in the attic.

Gincredible

Yay

Shaylin Cecere

Yay can’t wait to watch!

VStreet

can't wait to get out of work to watch this. Thank you Christine!!!

Elizabeth Yáñez

I would love an episode on using Photoshop.

Carol Blum

How fun!

Sara Estridge

Looking forward to watching this!!! Thank you, Christine 😉😊

Sherrie Potgieter

Awesome! This is going to be fun to watch. Thanks Christine!

Michelle Lofthouse

So want to try this technique, for my mother

Noni

I can only aspire to be as talented and creative as you. On another note, could you restore my youth from a photograph 😁. Just kidding... can't wait to watch this!

Lori Salvador

So cool! This inspires me to learn more and expand my hobbies.

Emily Martin

Wow you are so talented! Jeeeeezzz

Rez NYC

Christine. You have restored the guest room and dinning room. Did the house need anything more done to it? I love your restoration work.

Christopher Troy

Excited for this one!
