Creating a 10Ft Canopy Bed - From the Mind of Christine McConnell

In this episode I fuse together two separate second hand Bed frames to create one gothic monstrosity! And as a bonus, we go on a field trip to the NY garment District :D

So so far behind! I love the bed ❤️😍 also be careful, it looks like y’all ran a red light 😕

Elya Foust

Has the additional video been posted yet for the curtains and bedding? Trying to find it.

Wendy Cool

Barbie wishes she could be as cool as Christine!

Tonya Moore

Woe, you're so tall! Looking at you all made up; walking around. You look like a very eclectic real life Barbie doll.

Stacey Kirkbride

Oo! I did not realize there was a discord! I was just about to suggest making one, but there's already one in existence! Hurray! :D

I wish there was a Reddit page for this group of humans. It's so difficult to converse via Patreon.

Amber Elizabeth Stratman

I have the same question as Jennifer. ^ I know you've mentioned what brand it was in a past video but I can't remember for the life of me. It looks so comfortable and tightly sealed. Does anybody know what brand it is? 🙏🏻😷🤿

Amber Elizabeth Stratman

What respirator do you use?

Jennifer Lewis

Yes, so excited! Thank you, Christine.

Mononoke Adams

I just watched this again for the second time,( I needed a mental escape on my break at work) and still am enthralled with the work you made seem so easy!!! Thanks again!!!!

Killian Kincaide

Thank you so much for the specifics on how you assembled the thread portion! I’ve been trying to figure out how to add finials to an antique couch and had no idea that gold nugget thing was called a “threaded insert”. I love that I can take tidbits I learn from your videos and apply them. Now I'm off to Lowes for supplies! P.S. I’ve watched your Youtube for years but just joined Patreon and can’t wait to binge watch all of the additional videos <3

Mona

Sorry for any confusion. By furniture places, I mean restoration or refinishing shops.

Page Brunner

Hey! Just FYI. A lot of furniture places have a dip tank to strip all types of finishes if you aren't up to elbow grease. : )

Page Brunner

Soooo awesome

Sam Hussey

So inspirational it made me emotional! Can’t wait for the final reveal! The fabric and trim you picked out looks divine! And I couldn’t agree more with what Bree said! 💋

Hannah Graham-de Vries

Exactly Bree! ❤️‍🔥

Hannah Graham-de Vries

I'm sorry you felt like a hamster in this video! We all think you look lovely no matter what level of glam you're sporting. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who really appreciates that you share moments when you're in "normal" clothes, because it reminds us that nobody, not even the beautiful Christine whom we all admire so much and aspire to be like, can be glamorous and made up all the time. Especially when doing such hard work!! It gives us an honest look into your reality and I appreciate so much that you share that.

Bree Seeley

Beautiful 💕 💕 💕

Amy Watler-Thomas

Running those red lights! Love it!

My partner is a contractor and woodworker and he rescued a bunch of antique furniture from a job site that was just going into the dumpster. It makes me so sad to see nice wood covered with layers of paint.

Mina Murray

I really could not picture the two beds + extra spindles coming together cohesively at the start, but I never should'a doubted your instrincts. It turned out so fabulous, it just looked like the sculptor was Extra but not out of place!

Nora Dallaire

Right?? There's a buffet in my mom's house that my great-great-uncle rescued from a fire, because the backboard was broken and they figured they'd burn it rather than fix it. So it had some scorch marks, but it was slapped with a coat of paint and put in my great-aunt's house, and then it got passed down. Every few years, it would get repainted, and my mother painted it at least twice throughout my childhood. A few years back, my sister and I decided to strip it completely, see what the mythical fire damage was (ALMOST NOTHING) and fix it up. It took AAAAAGES. A good 60 years of paint piled one on top of the other! My family are electricians, not woodworkers, and boy does it show.

Nora Dallaire

I can’t wait to see the whole bed come together. It’s already such a thing of beauty. I know the bedding is going to just send it over the top.

Stephanie

Much thanks and applause for taking the time to comment on creating without destroying antiques. It’s so important, and you’re the only to say it in the hundreds of videos I’ve watched.

Gincredible

Great video! So looking forward to the next one that will tie it all in!

Annalise

So pretty!

Guiomar Martins

Longwing, thanks for the saw tip. I also checked out some of their suggestions for more. I think one or more of these saws will be a must have for my future projects!

Diane plevelich

For cuts like the ones you're making, you might want to look into getting a Japanese draw saw (https://www.amazon.com/SUIZAN-Japanese-Ryoba-Double-Edge/dp/B01MU9XB1W). These things are fantastic. Unlike western saws, they cut on the pull instead of the push. Because of this, they have a ton of advantages: 1 - They're super easy to control and can be used for precise cuts. 2 - They cut very fast and very easily. Much less work to get through the material (the saw does most of the work for you) 3 - They have very thin kerfs (blade thickness), which makes them good for the kind of high-precision work you're doing here. I'm bringing this up because watching you work through the posts with a coping/hack saw gave me empathy pains. I've done the kind of cut you're doing there on a few projects and I can't express how much easier it is with a draw saw.

Longwing

This makes me so excited for the final reveal!😍🥹

Viktoria Gavrilenko

Simply Amazing as always Christine!!!!

Luanne Hermann

Can’t wait for the finished look

Noni

So beautiful 😍

I feel your agony about stripping the stain. I have been slowly, slowly stripping a century's worth of cracked and peeling paint off the woodwork in my sewing room. It looks like there is varnish and oil paint and latex paint. I've managed to get half one one widow frame (out of three) done. It's a nightmare! The NYC fabric district is pretty impressive and you hit some of my favorite stores! I love LA's because, like you said, the prices are incredible and the selection is vast, but New York is much closer... Next time you're in the City, check out the Museum at FIT in the neighborhood. The exhibits are always great.

Mina Murray

Amazing as always! Love the scale and learned a few new things. Thank you! I built a bed using two victorian walnut upright piano's..and have done many smaller projects...have always wanted to go to East Coast Trims....its definitely on the bucket list! Its so much fun to create something new from something old or used and it can be addictive! One suggestion though. As a former dealer who has refinished A LOT of furniture, I stopped using paint and varnish remover. Its really optimized for paint removal, not varnish/stain removal and its very difficult and time consuming to work with. There is an alternative product that goes by different names, but "furniture refinisher" is the usual. Its optimized for varnish and is MUCH easier to work with. For those who don't want to do the elbow work of stripping varnish and stain, there is also a third option, which is to take your pieces to a furniture refinisher and have them "dipped". They will remove the old varnish, but not do any of the other refinishing work. It's usually not very expensive and can be a massive time saver while also not exposing you to chemical strippers.

Wow, your knowledge of so many different topics astonishes me, and your work ethic to bring us such beautiful and artful videos is another thing that makes me absolutely enjoy watching your videos. I wish my hamster look was as beautiful as yours:) thank you for all the hard work you do to bring us all the videos we love and enjoy! To me, it’s an extra birthday gift every time I see a new video. Thank you.

kathryn moore

I loved your video! This is Georgia again 😆 I can't wait to see how it looks with the drapery! You're so incredible!

Pug Lover

Gorgeous and TALL! Can't wait to see this grand bed all dressed up.

Racheal Jones

The three parts of the posts look so good and seamless together! The least ornate, smaller piece in the middle made the whole thing look balanced. The bed is already giving gothic castle vibes… really looking forward to the next episode. The field trip to the garment district was really interesting too. I live in Southern NY and love driving upstate, it’s so beautiful!

Jess Meister

Christine, check out this swing. Reminds me a little bit of the bed. It's in Virginia: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/241327208333359/?mibextid=dXMIcH

Jane Good

Wowwww!!! So much work! You must be so proud! STUNNING bed! Can't wait to see how it looks all dressed! You're amazing Christine. I have are request. Your set/filming seems so dark to me. I feel I miss so much around you because I cant see the detail. And might I add, you, yourself seem so far away. Just something I noticed, I love whatever you do. I would just love it to be brighter so I can see more :)

Suzanne

I don't see a drenched hamster, I only see a hard working artist and creator. Quite something to admire in my book.

AnnLeilani#InSoCal

Incredibly excited to see the final look!! Thank you for another amazing episode!!xx

Phoebe Boalch

I cannot wait to set aside some time and watch this episode! I have been working on a lampshade inspired by yours all week and it's still not finished! The amount of work, time and effort that goes into all your projects is amazing and inspiring x

Amy Bainbridge

That bed is magnificent!. It's a pain and time consuming stripping wood furniture especially one that is so ornate. I can relate. The fabric remnants you chose are also very pretty. Can't wait to see how it all comes together.

Dianna Porretta

Excellent work Christine, can't wait for part 2 🥰

Mikaleigh

So inspiring...I love how the opening credits feature the owl TV case that I believe is going to be in the room. Can't wait to see the finished room, the fabrics and trims are beautiful.

Willow Birch

I feel so lazy now. It's beautiful.

Alyne Whiteswan

Beautiful! Where did you get the additional wood spindles pieces from?

Heart W

What a stunning piece! I'm always fascinated & inspired by your builds, this one is amazing!

Penny

Gorgeous bed! 🙀 I am mesmerized! Wonderful, enchanting episode! May I ask, if we are in a tier that includes access to the score, where we may find that?? Thank you.

Val M

This was an amazing episode of how you merged these two pieces together! The skill

Joanne Zaborowski

Whenever I watch a new episode or live stream, my hubby knows that I'm "catching up on my stories" like a transfixed senior who is tuning into her favorite soap opera, and wishes not to be disturbed until after the program ends! :) The melded bed frame is a complete wonder...it's beautiful, and I was in awe of the garment district in NY (I've never been to NY)! When you started the disassembly part of the process though of the bed frames I thought oh my goodness...if I did this project I would have been found completely "turtled" on the floor by the end of the first day. "Turtle-ing" is my term for when my back and neck go out spectacularly and I'm found on my back on the floor...unable to get up (the status of my skeletal system is like a game of Connect Four, of which I am grossly losing). My hubby is usually called in, as I gently call out from the floor "honey...need a little help here!" Usually I can be found "turtle-ing" after I've done something completely not fun like after I've cleaned the house. At least if you turtle at all later, the rewards as such are beyond worth it! Can't wait to see the next episode!

Jenny McKinsey

I've never considered a bedframe to be mouth-watering until now. Resplendent!

Jane Good

Hubby and I have set aside time to watch this together tonight! He’s always dreamed of a having grand canopy bed!

Melissa Kerns

I can't wait to see what's next. Amazing job on that canopy bed.

Magdalena Mojica

The bed is so incredible! That fabric and trim looks amazing. I can’t wait to see it all put together!

Erin

New music, fab. Bed too. Thanks C.

Alaskan Rock Vodka

Totally inspiring episode. Between watching your adventures in the NY textile district and Bernadette Banner's, I am cursing myself for wasting the time I got to spend in NYC just going to plays and things. That looks like, pardon the farm reference, "hog heaven."

Elizabeth Scarborough

Wow I’m in love with your talent, hats off for you:)!

Martha Soria

Absolutely fabulous! There are no ends to your talents. So excited to see the finished room. Thank you for sharing with us x

Holly Limbert

I would love to see you collab on something with Voltaire. My two favorite gothic homemakers

willowflame13

Eternally and exponentially inspired by you! <3

Liesl Anne

I cannot wait to watch this while I work on my kittens casket bed <3 even tho she def probably won’t even sleep in it

Ellie

I'm picturing this bed coming out something like the paintings of beds by James Pryde and I am Excited

Suzy

My stars!!! What a beautiful job, well worth it!!!

Killian Kincaide

Can’t wait to see the whole room put together!

Roses

It's even more amazing than I had imagined! You always go above and beyond what the normal person does. I think your Wonderwoman and your just not telling us!

Anna Radaelli

Wild!!!! Cannot wait for the next episode! You never cease to amaze me with your talent! 💗

Kristin Ott

CHRISTINE!! I can't believe you're going to have to take that bed apart to put it in the bedroom!!!!! Hats off to you for your patience 💕[On a side note, being from New York/New Jersey, there's no place like New York for shopping ANYWHERE!! That's why it's the fashion capital of the world, together with Paris, and you're going to find TONS of discoveries as you shop there in the future.) 💝

Sophia Z

Wow! I can’t wait to see the bed all dressed up and ready to goth! 🖤

Jennifer Woolard

At least in your world it does actually happen. In my world, well, let's just say I'm living vicariously through you. 😄

Deb McGrath

Hats off to you for stripping such a huge piece of furniture, I've done small pieces and share your pain over the process! It looks stunning and I'm very excited to see how you use all those gorgeous fabrics.

Laura T

So excited for the next episode! And thank you for taking us with you to the NY garment district. I live in Montreal, Quebec, and I cannot wait to go to NY to discover that !

Aurelie Suberchicot

Hi Deb! I thought it was only going to take a week and it ended up taking close to four 😬 I’m never good at estimating how long things will take… I guess that’s my kryptonite 😂

Christine McConnell

Sad to note that most of not all of the discount fabric shops have either closed or moved to Queens.

Eva Cranky Pantz

omg beautiful work! & i love the color choice on the fabrics!!! <3

Bee

So excited I have been refreshing like a mad woman 😄 can't wait to watch!

Rochelle

Well done, christine, you make my day!

Emy AUBIN

That was amazing! How long did this take all together?

Deb McGrath

Glad you had a fun time romping around the garment district in the city! I’m sad to say that every year I lose another nyc supplier. They just keep closing. Hopefully B&J, mood, m&j trimmings and all the good ones stick around forever 🖤

Danielle Gonzalez

So happy to see that ! It's always a pleasure to watch your impressive work with a tea ❤️❤️ I can't wait to see the room !!

Hermine-Virginie Simon

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

DMCM

I'm so excited to watch! I'm gonna save it as a reward for marking book reports 😁

Tilura

Exciting! I want a bed like THAT. Christine, Have you ever thought of designing a line of gothic or victorian (for modern day use) furniture?

Brandy Parker

Oh my gosh, that is SO gorgeous! I know it must have taken just shy of an eternity to get all that old stain off, but it was worth it. I can't wait for next month's installment to see how it all turns out!

Tammy R Dowden

I do wish we had a garment district like that here in South Australia. I'm always on the hunt for vintage and antique haberdashery ❤️❤️

Liana Palumbo

This is SO much fun! Thank you for taking us with you to the garment district! The deep browns are stunning and I know we are in for a treat when you show us the end result. Enjoyed the new music! Thank you!

Michelle Lofthouse

Omg yes. Can’t wait to prepare my coffee and a snack and settle in for this!! Love these kinds of projects!
