Hand Drawn Wallpaper Part 1 - From the Mind of Christine McConnell

Hope you love this and I can't wait to chat about it later today, during the livestream! :D

Christine, would you be able to make an episode talking about how you became to be who you are, what/who inspired you, what you studied, what were your first projects that started your thirst for what you are doing now. If there is already a video like this, I’d love to see 🥹

That pattern would be both elegant and hysterical in an old Victorian bathroom. So much fun

Hey Christine :) If you find the illustrator toolset a little intimidating, perhaps try Paintstorm Studio. It is a raster based app, like Photoshop, but it has a handy dandy "seamless" mode for making tiling patterns. Beats the paint out of the broken offset filter workflow in Photoshop. As for illustrator, once you get used to bezier curves it is a delight, but you can also just use the pen tool in that space to draw with your Wacom tablet. I have spent the better part of 30 years making patterns so if you ever get stuck, feel free to reach out.

Hey Christine! If you don't already know! There is a way to draw in symmetry! when you hit B for brush, at the top of the application near the center you will see a little symbol of a little butterfly with a scored mark down the middle, hit that then vertical and there you go!! saves you half of the work ;)

It is such a joy to watch you work in so many mediums. Your imaginative execution combined with your drawing skills in this episode are magical and mesmerizing to behold! You should absolutely draw more simply for the joy of it-for you, wallpaper or no! My husband and I say all the time you are truly a present day Da Vinci! Cannot wait to see how this project unfolds!

great video. If you want to move things around in photoshop before committing to the pattern, there's a relatively new option under the 'View' menu called 'Pattern Preview' which essentially gives you an inifite preview of your wallpaper. you can move elemtns around and it updates the whole pattern in real time and then when you click 'Pattern Preview' again, it automatically makes the half drop repeat for you so you know it will be 100% accurate.

What was that music playing when you are drawing the first seahorse?
I’ve tried to search for it but my search tools aren’t picking it up, im guessing a licence free?
Absolutely loved this, inspires me to stay away from typical retail wallpaper and just create my own, why not, much more interesting and would last longer as it wouldn’t go in n out of fashion. Another inspiring video, thank you. Will definitely be buying this print

Just finished watching this and you mentioned you are a fan of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. We are too- so much so that we make custom light up signs inspired by it. We’d love to send you one of our 13 inch or 2 foot ones for free as a thanks for all the great content over the years. We’ve been fans from your cookbook days ❤️ I DM’d pics of them to your Instagram page 😊

This wallpaper is shaping up to be really special! As soon as I saw the porthole I was hooked, because it reminds me of stories that my Grandma used to tell. My Great-Grandma took my Grandma back and forth from Canada to England to visit her parents (my great great Grandparents) on a ship. They took a train from Winnipeg MB. to the port and sailed from there. She told stories about thick fog, high waves that came crashing into the boat and drenching people, she said once about the porthole blowing open and dishes getting knocked from the table and being invited to the Captain’s table for dinner. I have a copy of the original Declaration of Passenger to Canada that gives the details of one of her return trips with the date of sailing on the SS Montcalm on 30/11/1923 and booking onto CP rail from there. I have a photo of my Grandma attending school in England while she was there in her school uniform. One thing I found interesting about the Declaration of Passenger was as my Great Grandmother was travelling alone with her daughter it asked for the names of male relatives on either side. My Grandma was listed as destined to her Father in Canada and the nearest relative she came from her Grandfather in England - with no mention of the name of her Mother who travelling with her. The declaration is wallpaper on all my devices and reminds me that I can do plane journeys across the ocean with my own daughter taking her to Canada and back to England. My daughter is autistic and her special interest is the ocean anything to do with the sea and she is up for it. She is named after my Grandma too. Your nautical theme will have big fans here!

No joke. I have a deep sea antique themed guest bathroom. As you can imagine, pieces are hard to find. If it wasn't for my rib cage, my heart would have busted out of my chest when she started drawing. Can not wait to buy this pattern.

Oooh, you got a wacom tablet!! :D I think the tool for drawing circles is called a compass? It's 'un compas' in french, and I've never used one in an english context, idk. This is what happens when you're fluent in two languages but only ever study in one, folks, you're missing a bunch of really specific vocabulary.

As always, SO inspiring. I love that you are hand drawing the elements and including the hatching technique to give it a vintage feel. It's going to be amazing when you put them all together with Photo Shop. The new pentatonic music is a treat! And very appropriate for the Poof man.

For those interested who, like me, do not have Christine’s Herculean patience and skill, I’d suggest experimenting with Procreate. There are a massive amount of graphite brushes and other realistic art brushes available, the program is dirt cheap for what it can do, and best of all, you can undo, redo, and morph your attempts as you get the hang of it.

That was so enjoyable! I really like how you're adding crosshatching for that old, engraved look. Beautiful drawings, too. I can't help but wonder at the room in the last 'scene' -- it contains a bed, what seems like a small sink/ vanity, a scanner, and a desk with computer. Most unusual combination!

while I realize most people prefer shorter videos. I disagree and I’m going so far as to accuse you of cruel and unusual punishment for that cliff hanger ending...I am not even a sneak peek?!? You are such a talented artist and those skills, along with your perseverance, patience, attention to detail, and absolute fearlessness come together in some really incredible projects. I know the wallpaper will be spectacular, as all your projects are. I have no drawing skills- something I’ve always been sad about. I’m always impressed watching people who can do it so effortlessly. Your comment about getting better is certainly true and it does makes sense since practice makes perfect.

There's a book called "Bitten By Witch Fever" that I would highly suggest you check out - It's got a lot of examples of victorian wallpaper patterns that were known to have used arsenic and it's a gorgeous book. Could be a great reference/inspiration, but also just a really cool book to have.
LOVING this project!

The circle drawing doodad is a Compass (or pair of compasses), and interestingly the triangular ruler is actually called a Set Square in the UK. (I think you guys in the USA just call it a Triangle don't you?)

Really beautiful!!! Funny enough I had a brilliant idea last month to paint a sea creature mural inspired by the art of Ernest Haeckel in my bathroom and spent the entire day yesterday sketching creatures so I can cut them out and figure out placement on the wall before painting. What kind of creatures? Oh, octopus, jellyfish, nautilus, etc. I was sitting here watching like “well goddamnit, hers look better than mine AND doing it as wallpaper makes a lot more sense too!” Haha!! I’ll have to step up my game ;) Can’t wait to see it finished!
