Restoring 100+ Year Old Wallpaper - From the Mind of Christine McConnell

Thank you SO MUCH for you patience! In this episode I restore and renovate the dining room of our 1860's Victorian home.
Three more videos are coming...
-Christine
I saw a very very close match wallpaper in one of the Painted Ladies of San Francisco restoration video in Architectural Digest. Roses are identical. Background lattice is slightly different.

I was listening to “the Way I Heard It” the other day and was reminded, play dough was originally invented as a way to clean paper wallpaper. I wonder if the white play dough would still work?

I am so awestruck by your talent, which never ceases to amaze me, your imagination and execution is mind blowing Christine, that by the end of this episode, it actually made me cry when it came time for the “Grand Reveal”. But now, I also have some questions, like, how long did it take you to actually paint in and touch up the areas that needed to be done? As well as.. CAN WE DISCUSS THE NEW DECOR?!?! I want to know about the new dining room table and chairs, did you make them? And the chandelier, all the candlesticks (I found the king cobra ones already ;-) ) what did you do with the old dining table and chairs? Side board? I have so many questions... AND now I am completely OBSESSED with the wallpaper have you heard anything yet on whom may have made it?? Or about the arsenic? Your Loyal Stalker, Noelle <3

There’s a really fantastic app called TurboScan you can use to scan anything flat you can’t lay into a scanner. If you ever needed to recreate wall paper again, taping a measuring tape along the edge of the repeat, scanning it with TurboScan and making a stencil in illustrator or photoshop could be a good option.
Obviously you did an outrageously incredible job without it thought but I thought I’d pass along some unsolicited advice from a designer that occasionally has to make prints. 🥰

It was certainly worth the wait and it came out amazing! The hand painted areas match so perfect I can’t even tell where it was added vs the old paper. Love the floral print too. I rent my home but furnish my place on the same period, so I’ve decorated my walls with about 16 large panels of Victorian tapestry fabric with burgundy roses and green vines. I’m so in awe with the entire look of that dinning room. Now I need to work on adding in more decorative elements to mine.

It came out so beautifully! The colors of the original paper go SO WELL with the color of the marble on the mantel! And your paint matching was heroic! You started from scratch with the primary colors and ended with perfection! (That's SO hard because acrylic is not the same color wet and dry - it even changes color between dry on the first day and dry on the second day!) You are the Queen of color matching! I'm swooning over your finished room - SO AMAZING!!!

While it's not my taste, I admire your dedication 10000% to re-creating that wallpaper! I also loved the painted ceiling with the darker olive tone rather than the cream that was there!
Instead of freehand drawing the panels, was there a reason you didn't use tracing paper?
Looking forward to the coming episode on how you put the room together and how you edited the space!

OH! also since you know photoshop & illustrator you can scale any design in illustrator and you can tile print. So if you design in illustrator you can print straight from there, but you can also design in photoshop or scan a handmade design and then place in illustrator to scale and print from there. Tile print will print "tiles" onto normal sized paper. It saves me so much time for a lot of different personal and work projects. <3

So Beautiful! You did such a wonderful job!
There are a couple of techniques that can save you time for your template. You can use tracing paper and then lay that on graphite transfer paper (they make both light and dark)
OR mural and sign painters use a tracing wheel on paper (it punches small holes) You tape it up and then rub with chalk and it transfers a dotted outline of the design onto the desired surface. (it's made for sewing) Someone else mentioned the projector, which works for a lot of transfers though I think it would be more of a pain in the hiney to keep moving and refocus for a repeating pattern.
I'm so glad I joined your patreon, watching these extra videos have been very relaxing and inspiring. THANK YOU! :)

Beautiful, fantastic work Christine <3 You are so inspiring and I can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the house. The details and the craftmanship that you put into everything is just beond words. I am sure this is a stupid question, but could you have used tranparent paper (sorry don't know the english word) to trace the pattern? We have something here in Norway that we use to rap our lunch in that I often use when I want to copy something. It is what you use when you bake, but without the greced side. I just loved this video, as i do with all your videos.............can you tell I am a huuuuge fan of your work?....hahahaha........I never comment to anyone like this, but I just am so impressed and inspired by you. Fantastic work. I don't know where you get the patience from. I'm struggling to finish painting my kitchen cupboards. :D
I must say though, am I the only one who worries about Christine's feet when she's doing projects? Seeing her wear socks or flat pumps when on ladders or next to power saws genuinely gives me anxiety. o.O

Beautiful-would you ever have your own original wall paper design professionally printed? Like commercially so your patreons could purchase it.

You have the most incredible patient Christine, it looks a million times better. I adore the green majolica dinner set with the dusty pink napkins and gold accents, i'm inspired. Love love love X

I have questions ! Lol. Did you mix all 14 colors only once (those paint containers didn’t look very big)? Did you have to go back and make more, is that something you are writing the recipe down for? Can’t wrap my mind around how you just eyeballed this! Maybe we could have some bonus footage of what you painted in daylight? It’s really incredible. In awe!

What a monumental and inspiring project! The paper is gorgeous and matching it with paint had to be very challenging! It turned out beautifully. Question....did the candelabras on the table come with the house? They are incredible! I love how you extended the theme of the wallpaper into the corners around the crown moldings and around the chandelier attachment point. You added so much depth and detail to the room.
