From the Mind of Christine McConnell - The Graphophone

In this episode I refurbish and embellish a Columbia Graphophone from 1906!

From the Mind of Christine McConnell - The Graphophone

Comments

I think this one is gone as well

Sarah

Christine - ever since I saw your house tour, I had been wanting Henry Hall's record "Teddy Bear Picnic" and a gramaphone/phonograph to play it on. This gramaphone you redid is SO beautiful and inspired me again. I found someone selling an original record of this recording on Ebay. I bid for it and WON! I can't wait to hear it via a gramaphone/phonograph - and now I have to find one that I can afford. YOU are MY inspiration - thank you for putting out these amazing, vintage-inspired craft and decorating videos for a beautiful and "spookified" life!

Ivy Fong

This is definitely my favorite. I have a love for anything vintage, so seeing how to restore them and putting a little spin on them is so good!

Lydia

I loved this video and I would love to know how you altered the TV in your guest room.

Raven Vancil

Absolutely, totally and completely LOVED this!!! Thank you!!! =D

Doreena Clark

A thought I had while watching this: The episodes that have to do with things in this home, burn them onto a DVD and leave them behind for the new owners. It'd be a nice surprise and I'm sure they'd love to see how their home became what it is!

Aaron

Would the diamond tip last forever?

Aunt Debbie Halloween

INCREDIBLE! The result is so impressive...I just loved this episode.

Jodie Treloar

You can use a diamond tip needle too. The previous owner of mine gave me that tip, and it even sounds more clear. :)

Amanda Williams

I’ve always wanted a graphophone, I like to see what I can find in the trash and once found a whole book of Victoria records. Only one was broken so I kept them. It would be a dream to live in that house and treasure all that you have created, it’s like we shear a dream of romantic and creepy. I will truly be sad not to see this home when you move but will be excited to see what’s next.

Rebecca Valentine

Oh, I absolutely loved that! Seeing the care and artistry you put into these restoration and preservation projects is so beautiful. And it makes for a strangely soothing video, honestly. I'd love to see more as long as you have ideas and antiques. ❤

Violet

Are you doing a project list for this? I'm curious as to what kind of paint you used. Thanks

Amber L Haden

This has been my favorite episode so far! I did not know about having to replace the needle constantly. I already have a record player I use a lot, I think it would be neat to convert one of those old broken ones into a side table/lamp. Know how to do electrician stuff? Is that even possible?

Christine Lambert

This was amazing, and also very inspiring. 💗

Elisse Kenaley

Beautiful work 💕

Heather Eisner

lahv lahv lahv these restoring projects! 😍

Nurul Asyiqin Mohamed Fadzil

My very first dance recital when I was 3 we danced to Teddy Bear's Picnic! So funny that it's the B side of that record!

Theresa Clay

So beautiful!

Michelle Perry

Amazing work, I’d be too scared to touch something that old. Random trivia on the needles: you replace the needle on every play because the record contains an abrasive that wears away the needle. The reproducer is heavy and would easily damage a disc, so they used soft steel needles to avoid the disc getting damaged.

Thea Hutchings

I've just found time to watch and as always, I love everything you do and I learn so much from each episode. I noticed a new creation (music) and love it too. I have an old pie safe and would love to restore it and maybe embelish with neat things like the claw feet :) Thank you for sharing your time and talent xoxo

Sherrie Potgieter

Amazing as always. This was so fun to watch and so informative as well. Thank you!

Ken Sutton

So good!

Sterling Marie

Wow this was amazing!! That was really cool to hear the song on the gramophone!! It looks beautiful 💜🖤

Lori Vanlandingham

Sarah

It's like right out of that scene in Alice in Wonderland

Sarah

She looks stunning! I love the gradient.

Susanne Tassin

You did an amazing job. I thought I was over gramaphones/graphophones but the desire to find one is back! Thanks for the interesting video.

Jack Applin

That is gorgeous. I love the colours.

Roberta Hickey

Yes, please keep Ohio in mind.

Chris Cornett

Beautiful!

Chance havins

I love how much you love this album! I think I've had both Teddy Bear's Picnic and Hush Hush Hush on and off stuck in my head collectively since September because of this Patreon and it's actually really pleasant. I find myself humming them a lot when I'm happy...so, thank you!

Cally

Wow, that was amazing. It turned out so beautiful! You took it to another level with the claw stand and you matched the colour SO perfectly it looks like it's part of the original. Fascinating to watch. Thank you!

Clare Buswell

This was so cool! The painting turned out SO nice!! With every coat I was just like...it’s getting better and better! Really cool to see what you can do with an antique. You give it such a cool new life! I love all your videos and am happy to see anything you make next Christine! 💜

Jakface

I still can't get over how beautiful it came out! 💜💜

Cassie

I just can't even! You are so talented, it's crazy. This was so fun to watch!

Jes

You did such a great job of restoring that gramophone. It looks beautiful! These kind of episodes are my favorite. I love antiques so much.

Angie Holman

Christian Gauding

FINALLY got to sit down and watch this. Amazing. We have an antique mall near where I live and they have a beautiful selection of gramophones that I have been eyeballing for years every time I go in, but the price point always had me depressed every time I saw them. Everything is slowly going on sale, so I am waiting till it gets real good to grab one myself and try this out!

Nicholas Frig

Oh cool!

Emily

definitely need more projects like this your restoration progress is seriously relaxing, very therapeutic

isabel tomkinson

Sooo beautiful!!! It was amazing watching you put so much work into this project. It is really inspiring.

gwenski

It's stunning! I really enjoyed this episode. You have inspired me to try a restoration project

Laura Chambers

Graphophone is a trademarked name. Graphophones were invented at Bell's Volta Laboratory and made by Columbia. It's an improved version of Edison's Phonograph. Gramophone was also a trademarked name but was ruled generic in the UK. This bit of trivia in part brought to you by my friends at Emporium 32 (check them out if you're in Salem!) who have an Edison Phonograph.

Mina Murray

I desperately want this cover image for my house too 😍 do you sell images or photos at all? I love it 💕

Kimberley Howes

It's gorgeous, and I'd love it if you did episodes restoring antiques and making them as amazing as this one

cassandra staples

Such a great episode!! Can’t wait for more projects. I have quite a lot of antiques from my mother and I’ll definitely try to fix the veneered pieces of furniture. It looks easy enough to try. Was wondering if you would give the pattern for your needlepoint scarecrow you share in the opening of your show. So cute!!!

Elaine Taylor

Truly a work of art! Also loved the background music in this episode, so magical and relaxing.

Sean Ryan

I was curious about what type of paint also- and did she have to seal it in some way so it wouldn’t scratch 🤔

Ellerie “Sit in Your Tears” Maddox

One of my favorite episodes so far!!!

Elizabeth

Another great episode! The kitties are getting so big. I am in awe of your woodworking abilities. Did you take furniture making classes or have you just done so many projects that you've gotten the mistakes out of the way?

Maggie Fry

Loved loved loved this episode. All the elements of a true Christine McConnell creation- gorgeous, spooky, unique, funny, slightly twisted- thank you!

Kirsten Perez

This turned out SO beautiful. ☺️ you made the transformation look so easy!!

Elle Gallow

I love the way your added claw foot base balances the size of the speaker

Eve Taylor

I also thought Gertie was a furry pillow until I saw her breathe!

Aunt Debbie Halloween

This was amazing! I love the entire Graphophone re-do, but especially the feet! I don't know if you did this or not, but if you use multiple coats of shellac and rub with 000 steel wool in between, and after the last coat, it will glow like years of polishing. It turned out amazingly beautiful!

Aunt Debbie Halloween

I think Graphophone is what they were called in the US, and Gramophone was what it was called in the UK.

Aunt Debbie Halloween

Absolutely loved this episode! I would love to see more restoration projects like this. It is all so fascinating!

Anwyn Alene

This was so fascinating!! Thank you for another wonderful episode.

Amanda Boldreghini

Fantastic episode. Nailed it again!

April

I loved this episode! The colors you incorporated were gorgeous, and it is incredible to see what you can do to preserve and also elevate these antiques! I'm always amazed by your talent. Would love to see more episodes like this.

Kathryn Elizabeth Clark

I absolutely loved this episode! I love seeing antiques made like new again but still with your special creative touches. The pedestal is such a great idea because it can be removed if needed but it still looks like it is part of the piece. Can't wait to see your episode on the owl tv cabinet. Thanks!

Christine Jones

It is so beautiful. I have always wanted one. I love the color scheme. It is perfect! One day when I can decorate my bedroom it will be very much like your home - magical, mysterious, macabre and cozy. I would love to see you makeover an upright player piano. I love listening to them. Then again I would want it for my home.

Sherry McGinn

Would it be possible to upload these via youtube instead so they can be saved to playlists, similar to how the livestreams are? I love having this on a rotation i can watch/listen to while I'm doing crafts :)

Heather Caswell

That was one of my favorites! Thanks so much for sharing, and it's also kind of nice to know about your diy "Achilles heel," helps remind some self-defeatists that you don't have to be perfect in your skill/technique to keep trying! <3

Izile

I love the clawfoot pedestal!

Lauren M

This episode was so beautifully done! I am going to have to be on the lookout for a graphophone now. The colors you picked are perfect. Did you post what colors you used to mix and match? And are they acrylic? Oil based? I heard you say that you added paint thinner. Also, Love Love Love Teddy Bears Picnic! Thank you for sharing.

Andre Hall

This was amazing! It's nice to see I'm not the only one who likes restoring old things. You're just much better at it than I am. lol

Ashley Hasna

A beautiful project!

Bethany Baker

I LOVE the idea of making a coffee table book! Please consider opening this opportunity for all patrons - not just for those in the $40 tier. I would love to purchase this book. ♥️

Margot Shteir-Dunn

Wonderful episode :)

Rebecca

The most stunningly beautiful gramophone 😍 honestly am in awe of your process and your talent. Incredible!

Julia

I can’t even use enough words to tell you how much i am just absolutely blown away by this!!! HOLY MOSES THIS IS OUTSTANDING! These episodes are my favorite!!! 💜🖤💜🖤💜

Ellerie “Sit in Your Tears” Maddox

I have one that I bought new needles for, but when I place the arm on the record...it’s like it’s too heavy and it stops spinning. They’ve had a few gramophone repairs on The Repair Shop 😍 (BBC antique restoration show show I catch on Netflix) and I hope to see them fix one with the same issue. Hoping it’s not the spring.

M W

Loved this restoration! Please do more 😍🖤

Stevie

Loved this episode!! It's so amazing seeing the process, and the gramophone came out stunning!!! Thanks so much for showing all the process! 🖤 Small request, do you think you could post a list of the products you use in your videos? Not necessarily brands, but more of what it is. I'm always learning new things while watching (I didn't know that paint remover stuff! Looks like magic!!), but it's sometimes hard to catch the name during the video, it'll just be great to have a written list to refer to :)

Naama

I'm a little confused. I thought this was a gramophone. Could someone please explain the difference to me?

Emily

Wow you’re so creative it’s truly amazing to watch! Also thank you for the gift I received it yesterday and it is already up on my wall! 🐙

jackie alvarez

I absolutely loved this! Thank you

Christie

That was SO cool & fascinating to watch!

Megan Eppel

If you decided to keep it I don’t think anyone would judge you harshly. It’s officially been turned into a piece of you!

Sara Estridge

That was AMAZING!!! I loved it. Might be one of my new favorites! 💜📣🎵 Love records, love antiques, & love restoration! Thank you. Keep them coming.

Julie HeartCommunity

Wowzer!!! I shouldn't be surprised but, there isn't anything you can't do!! Loved how the project came out!

Absolutely loved the episode and I would happily watch you restore antiques for the rest of my life 😻

Sally Thorne

I've got an Edison Phonograph and the speaker part is a blood red. I've been wanting to redo it to Mossy acid green because that's the accent color in the room it's in. I'm scuuurred! Should I go for it?!

Sinister Sarah

Amazing work! Thanks for sharing,

Sean Guthrie

I just want to say thank you for always making my $3 worth it. Money has been tight for the past months but these videos always bring so much joy and inspiration. Thank you!

Lily

Wow!! That color is amazing. So fun to watch your process. I bought your Patreon when I saw this video was exclusive to it!

Tessa Johnson

I've been wanting a graphophone for ages and this just confirmed in my mind that I definitely need one 😂 I'm so glad you posted this now because I can't stay up for the livestream and I was so disappointed, but at least I got to watch this and I can watch the live stream tomorrow 😁

Sarah Kane

Wonderful episode! The video quality and editing is also getting incredibly good.

Paul Fliedner

This is gorgeous! Yes please to more vintage restorations. Thank you for sharing. ^_^

SailorMarj

I have a 1915 Edison Phonograph that plays cylinder records. My grandfather found it in the 1940s and restored it. It still works! We have several records including a few whistling records that make our pets go crazy!

Rae

This was wonderful. I love the different inspirations you come up with for all these pieces. I'd love to see how you restored some of your wire lampshades frame at some stage.

Tadgh Kirby

Awesome!!! Love how it came out!!

Brenda Hunt

Magnificent 🖤

Rachael

So incredible💜🌸 love love love!

Shelby Snow

Gorgeous! Love all the colors

Tori

WOW the way the colour of stand matched the cabinet perfectly I GASPED

Rebecca

WOW! 👌 It turned out SO beautiful! Your amount of care and attention to detail is always on point and always amazes me. I have to ask how you dispose of the cloths and things that you work with when stripping the potentially hazardous paint and how you clean the tools- or if you even reuse them? Do you just dispose of everything? I wouldn't know what to do with that. You're brave for working with old things that could contain lead or other toxic things- I am so health paranoid when it comes to that stuff that it's actually like a phobia that I have- it's so ridiculous 🤣

Jade

The base you added to the piece really tied everything together. Love the gold added to this as well💞

Kathryn Kauffman Psychic Medium

Love seeing antiques being restored, hope to see more in the future. Especially with a creepy twist!

Ella Sadkin

Beautiful! I just love the way you made the colors come together ❤️ Super excited for the livestream too!

Bethany Cramer

Very interested in more videos like this. Watching the process is really fun.

Megan

Fantastic! I love the end result. I came across some very old lamps at my grandmother's, I plan on restoring the shades since they are in storage decaying delicate lace and fringe.

Summer Rose Barnes

Gosh you went after my heart with this episode! I was so mesmerized and I am so happy you played a record at the end! Totally made my heart sing!! I think this may have been my most favorite episode to date! Thank you!!!! 💖💖💖💖

Kristin Ott

This is absolutely unreal! These are my favorite projects of yours. What type of airbrush do you use? Do you use it for multiple project types?

Hayley Hochstettler

Absolutely stunning! Your ability to learn new trades and techniques is astonishing and inspiring! :) Much love from Oregon!

Kortney Oen

Yay!

HighfromAustin

Oooooooo

Dawn Hargy-Louden
