Vintage Cover Crisis

Yesterday, I posted the cover for the Amazon Arrow's Cover Crisis Digital Comic; however, it just wasn't quite conveying the effect that I was after. The color pallet was pulled directly from the DC Comics color guides from the early 80's, so I knew that they were technically accurate, but the colors looked too bright and polished on my screen. After fussing over it for awhile, I arrived at the conclusion that the reason those 80's colors seem so bright and over-saturated today is that we usually see them printed on old, yellowed newsprint. "White" is the color of the paper and is never pure white. Black ink absorbs into the paper and becomes a shade of dark grey. Colors are never fully saturated. Ink has been scratched off. Tiny folds and imperfections are present due to wear and tear. All of these factors contribute to our perception and memory of what a comic book from the 80's should look like.

So... after a little playing around with settings and textures in Photoshop, I arrived at the version on the left.

Personally, I think it's an improvement and I think I'll be using this effect throughout this digital comic, but please let me know your thoughts below. After all, it's very soon going to be YOUR digital comic!

Peace,
Chryseis
