In bleach, the butterflies work like telephones that got dropped after the Orohime recuse arc.
Thought it was a neat idea to bring back the concept since the idea of a swordman's calling card being a butterfly is somehow beautiful but hellishly terrifying when you realize, butterflies don't fly at night.
