Announcement: A Change of Plans for 2022

Hey everyone! I hope you’re all having a good start to 2022. I have a bit of news that I want to share with you.

The video above explains it all, but I’ll put the short version here. Over the last couple of years I’ve struggled with the development of the city-builder game, as I’m sure many of you have noticed! It’s been over two years now since I started development on this game and I feel like it’s not even a quarter of the way to completion yet. That has of course not been helped by the various health issues and operations I’ve had since starting this game, but I’ve also had a harder time finding the motivation to work on such a demanding project.

Something had to change, because I don’t want to just keep creeping along with progress year after year without ever really getting anywhere. So I had a big think at the end of last year and in the end I conceded that the city-builder game is just too ambitious for me right now. Therefore, I decided to take a break from the city-builder and switch to a smaller, more realistic game instead.

At the start of January I began work on this new game. I wanted to try it out for a month first before letting you guys know, to make sure that I was making the right decision. And so far it’s been going really well! I’ve been enjoying it so much, I’ve been more productive than I’ve been for ages, and so I definitely plan to continue with this new game until its release.

The new game is a casual farming game about growing fruit and veg in your garden and selling it at the local market to make profit, which you then reinvest in your garden to improve it and make it more efficient. The first devlog is going to be released tomorrow, but you guys can see it early here: https://youtu.be/2xElle5HvPE

You can also download the game to have a look at what I’ve done so far (currently Windows only). Unzip then run the jar file. You’ll need Java installed on your computer for it to work. The readme file explains the current controls: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kDyRdkR51k_G7UwPdQaOw5QtH7KJr-5l/view?usp=sharing

Really sorry if you were enjoying the city-builder and those devlogs - I hope you can somewhat understand my decision.

If you have any questions just let me know!

Karl

Smart decision. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thank you very much :) And I do like the idea of having some story element, I think that could work nicely with the game.

Wise to cut your losses and work on something realistic. I'm here for the cosy atmosphere of your videos so smaller projects are better for that too. Best luck

Karl, whatever you decide to develop I'll support you! You've done a great job on all the projects you've worked with! Take care of your health and keep doing this amazing work. By the way, the Farming game looks amazing and relaxing! I loved the different types of crops/seeds and seeing the seeds grow into plants. If you haven't thought about that before, you could add a Family of Farmer that the player could also manage, for example, start with a 30 y.o. man who owns the Farm House and works there, than find a wife, get her to help him, have kids and then build a story out of it, with them getting older, the children growing and inheriting the Farm House and the process repeats itself with no end. The user could take actions and decide the path of the story, if the user wants the family to be bigger or smaller, get animals maybe. Just some ideas.

I'm glad you're feeling excited about this new game! It's never easy making these decisions, but in these situations you have to do what feels right. Ultimately the best game and devlog content will be a result of you feeling positive about the work. Looking forward to a great year! Happy farming :)

If you ever want to delegate some work off to a C# dev eager to learn... :)
