Symat, Prince of Siania

Ayn's brother needed a full treatment for a while now, and some of you had been asking a fair bit. So I owe it to him to doodle a little more and flesh out his markings, full body appearance, personality some, and more. I always liked the idea of a mute character and what changes that would befall them. Seems like a rare occurrence these days.

Sym is Ayn's older brother by a few years, and as a child, suffered in a shuttle re-entry disaster which injured his vocal box beyond even the most advanced medical repair. My current iteration of the story is that radiation from space and the atmosphere mutated his genes and made it extremely difficult to operate on, and by the time it normalized, he had grown to accept it as part of who he was, and the injury became permanent. This to me made more sense than 'vow of silence' or 'mental trauma' for an otherwise pampered prince who could've had the best medical facilities available. Only something rare and extreme I think could prove 'beyond repair' for one of his status. As a result he's very humble, spent a lot of time working out, learning on his own in the palace. Princes  are kind of powerless in the political layout as they don't inherit anything, so usually their roles become framework for the female line. Side pieces, trophies, etc. or at best, given roles around the palace.

I'm still not 100% sure on all of this though. It's late and I'm rambling some. Enjoy!

Yo, what about damage to the brocca's area. It's the part of the brain that manages self-speech (not the processing of speech, so he would still be able to understand language). A society with any degree of advanced technology I think would have a substitution or fix for a vocal cords problem (we got tons of them in the modern day), but brains are fuckin' brains. If you really want it to be vocal cord damage, you could have his vocal cords be paralyzed through trauma. It's not impossible to talk with paralyzed cords, but it's pretty ungraceful and spluttery, so perhaps he doesn't talk so as to not embarrass himself. This happened to my college soccer coach. He took a ball to the neck and boom, one of his vocal cords stopped working for the rest of his life. kinda ended his career as a coach.

Bulky

I like him a lot! :D I hope we get to see more of him!

SCPilot

I dunno.. i flip back and forth with that stuff all the time

FluffKevlar

Thanks! His thing with Ayn is close; he loves her and tries to shield her from her mother somewhat, though she later grows to not care too much.

FluffKevlar

I like the idea of him being legitimately mute, and not just by choice. It's something rarely seen in character designs and is an interesting "flaw" for the character to deal with. Can't wait to see how him and Ayn get along. ;)

Silvador

If they are going the whole Mute rout, I'd rather he use sign language. a Collar is an easy out and a cheat.

Spartan277

Like him already. It's interesting to see character that can't say something due to big misfortune is quite well balanced and settled with his past. Since he can't say something, is he gonna use sign language or does his collar speak for him?

SVKwolf

Wow! He's pretty handsome! Shame he lost his voice. Good work! ;-)

Korben the Dragon

Ayn's sterile? I had no idea.

KCDodger

Could the accidental cosmic radiation exposure during the shuttle accident also be what sterilized Ayn, or did you already have an explanation for that? If not, that could be a clean way of tying those otherwise minor details together and give them a strong point of empathy for each other. I don't know what you *intend* their relationship to be, but at least at the moment, I'm picturing them holding a bit of fondness and tenderness for each other from living under their rather cold and stern mother.

Volpethrope

He's tall.

Very interesting way to do a mute character. They're difficult to write for, I can say that much, and my goodness I've tried very hard to roleplay one and it is always, always difficult. But difficulty is good! Difficulty is how we as artists grow, be it growth through writing, art, song, one simply cannot advance without challenging themselves. I think TryMan has a solid concept as to how the voicebox thing occurred- that it was simply too dangerous to operate on safely for somebody so young. But this one works too, just needs polish like any concept (but as somebody who doesn't know the setting as well as the writer of it ever could, I cannot say what is and is not feasible for sure.) Whatever the case may be, I quite enjoy him aesthetically. Boy's got some mad hips lemme tell ya, and I can definitely see that he takes much more after Kabir, but Kesis' influence is not lost on him (Seeing it largely in his narrow torso, muzzle, and black hair). I do hate to sound like such a lecher, but I can't help but wonder what he looks like fully at attention. Speaking of which- she has... Interesting dynamics with her family members. Each one is different. What's his relationship with Ayn?

KCDodger

wow a complete overhaul he looks alot more like his father and sister but i dont see any mommy in there as for the story i dont know much about your universe as much as id love to. But i feel that you've taken the best coarse you could've taken only im not onboard with whole radiation thing a more believable story would be that it was just less dangerous to leave him be then to operate its very uncommon but but happens again i dont know much about your universe and end of the day its your decision

TryManX

So handsome.

Mira Inhara

He looks gorgeous!

F'yacin

What an attractive fellow! Hm, does he "canonically" have a sheath (in contrast to Sabir) or is this just testing how he looks with one?

Bionet

:) Thank you Fluff! Thank you! I really like him and I'm so happy that you've finally drawn him! Now I can request him to be drawn now!

SCPilot

he looks nice, and the story fits well too

Teckly

Damn, he's a babe :3
