Chapter 425: The Awakening of Gareth

Sarah Axel sobbed throughout the journey, while Renee Axel detailed her sister's and Marin’s situation in full.

Marin, hailing from the New Continent, had found it impossible to remain there amid the chaos of the New Continent Evil God War. Forced to return to the Old Continent, he brought his adventuring team along. Though he possessed considerable martial prowess, he could not secure a lucrative position and instead sought refuge under Prince Alfrey Axel. Using his polished demeanor and rare high-level Transcendent abilities, he had managed to form a relationship with the royal maiden.

Charlot Mecklenburg thought back to the Pumpkin Lady and how Renee avoided the Unicorn Deer, piecing things together in his mind.

This Marin was truly a despicable character.

Charlot Mecklenburg was not such a man.

He didn’t dwell on Marin’s ultimate intentions. Clearly, Marin wasn’t working toward anything good. Otherwise, with his strength, a few years of hard work could have secured him a prestigious position in Fars and even a legitimate marriage to the prince’s daughter.

But Marin clearly preferred a shortcut, the kind Charlot despised.

In any case, Charlot had no regrets about killing Marin.

Had the Axel sisters gone missing elsewhere with no connection to him, Charlot would have dismissed it with a laugh. He would not have intervened or felt any anger.

Charlot only cared about matters that affected him or those close to him, unlike the many who sought “justice” for strangers from thousands of miles away yet neglected those nearest to them.

As a mathematics teacher, Charlot often felt out of step with the public. He didn’t concern himself with distant strangers but instead focused on his family and friends. He had no interest in the New Continent’s plight and cared only for the future of the Countdom of South Seraph.

However, Renee’s recounting provided insight into the New Continent’s troubles. Charlot recalled his recent encounter with the pirate Red Hawk, who had seemed unremarkable at the time. Now, it was evident that life there had become truly dire.

Even Saints and high-ranking Transcendents struggled to survive. How bleak must life be for ordinary people?

It was likely that only those like Red Hawk or Marin, wielding Extraordinary abilities, could escape the New Continent. Most common folk lacked the means to flee.

While this world had magic warships, its overall technological capacity was underdeveloped, incapable of producing sufficient vessels for mass migration between continents.

Even if all the world’s ships were mobilized, the annual capacity would only number in the hundreds of thousands. Coordinating such an effort was unfeasible. For refugees, the limited transport capacity between the New and Old Continents was nothing more than a drop in the ocean.

Recognizing his powerlessness, Charlot sighed. If even a Saint like Red Hawk had to retreat, what could he, Charlot Mecklenburg, possibly do to save so many people?

He wasn’t a deity.

Once, Charlot had considered journeying to the New Continent to seek a solution to the looming descent of the Labyrinth God, but he now understood the wisdom of High Priest Auguslatin’s words: “Focus on producing more offspring.”

The New Continent likely held no means of countering the Evil God. Its people could only combat their harrowing mortality rates by increasing their population. If a solution existed, it would have already been employed.

...

Charlot returned to the small town of Rachma with the Axel sisters.

After giving Antonio a brief explanation, Charlot left the matter to him, wanting no part in handling the delicate situation.

A while later, Antonio returned to ask Charlot for manpower. He requested that Regulus, the eldest Saint, escort the Axel sisters back to Strasbourg, reasoning that his seniority would reduce the likelihood of gossip.

Charlot readily agreed, but Regulus refused to travel alone with the two sisters. Charlot had no choice but to send Viggo along as well. Together, the two escorted the Axel sisters to Strasbourg.

With that issue resolved, Charlot inquired about Antonio’s situation.

Antonio, with a touch of pride, remarked, “In the two days you were gone, my strength has been steadily declining. The power bestowed by the Goddess has mostly left me.”

“However, I’ve stabilized at the twenty-fourth tier!”

“I was once hailed as the future strongest in Fars, but that was due to my youth rather than my strength. Beyond my father, many were stronger than I.

“Now, you can call me the second strongest in Fars. Except for my father, no one else here has reached the twenty-fourth tier.”

“With the Darkmoon in my hands, even my father, Constantine, Uncle Juno, or the Count of Champagne might not defeat me in battle.”

Looking at his brother-in-law, Charlot couldn’t help but feel grateful. Antonio was destined to be his most reliable ally in the future.

That staff Charlot had gifted him long ago had been worth every bit.

...

Charlot and Antonio stayed in Rachma for half a month, awaiting the return of Regulus and Viggo, allowing the Saints to recover their strength, and restoring the two knight orders to fighting condition.

Despite suffering heavy losses, their eight Saints ensured they retained overwhelming combat power.

Antonio was preparing to launch another assault on the Duchy of Mossred, and Charlot raised no objections. Just then, a messenger arrived with startling news: their prisoner, Gareth, younger brother of Duke Mossred and a former summoner of the Evil God, had awoken.

When the Black Dragon seized the Blood Rhinoceros, it had also brought back Gareth, who had been in a coma. His soul had been shattered by the Flame Evil God Anururu, leaving him in a near-destroyed state. No one had expected him to recover.

Charlot lamented that he no longer had a Magical Contract Scroll. Otherwise, he would have made Gareth another housekeeper.

When he heard Gareth was awake, Antonio was equally astonished. Together, they went to meet the fallen noble.

Though Gareth’s reputation and standing paled in comparison to his brother’s, his strength was on par with Rembrandt Mossred. Otherwise, he would not have survived summoning an Evil God.

It was worth noting that Charlot Mecklenburg, the mathematics teacher from another world, would not have survived a single Evil God Summoning attempt.

When Charlot saw Gareth, the once-proud Saint now had the pure, curious gaze of a child. His innocent eyes wandered around the room as though he were exploring the world for the first time.

Charlot’s heart skipped a beat as he mused, Has he lost his memory?

To test his theory, Charlot called out teasingly, “Son! You’ve finally woken up!”
