Although this was merely the Wang family’s speculation, and no one could verify it, the likelihood was exceedingly high.
The River of Death within the Netherworld Domain was already terrifying, but the River of Death at the Hell level was far worse. Every instance of it within the region had become a forbidden zone without exception.
One must understand: even the Netherworld-level River of Death near Dragon City—only at the Netherworld level—had forced territorial concessions to avoid it. The Hell-level River of Death rendered the surrounding thousand-mile radius a restricted area.
“Thank you.”
Li Hao saw that Wang Zhendong had spoken so much and decided not to waste any more time.
With Wang Zhendong leading the way, they swiftly flew toward the edge of the small town.
Here, black mist churned, marking the town’s boundary.
“Hurry, you should leave first,” Wang Zhendong said immediately.
Wang Yongzhi and the others understood that they had become burdens at this point. Staying would only cause more trouble.
They quickly took out the tokens of the Netherworld-level River of Death—pitch-black wooden plaques. These plaques had been collected from the ancestral shrine within the River of Death.
For ordinary people, merely entering the shrine to retrieve these tokens would be an incredibly perilous task. The area was rife with mutated demonic spirits and remnant souls that could attack at any moment.
However, the Wang family had already dispatched experts to clear out the dangers beforehand. All that remained was to consider how to use the tokens to pass through.
At this moment, Wang Yongzhi handed one to Li Hao, then summoned the River of Death List.
Sheets of golden paper appeared, glowing with a light that enveloped their bodies, part of which extended to the black wooden plaques.
But in the next instant, the plaques disintegrated into powder under the golden light.
“What?!”
Wang Zhendong’s expression darkened.
Not only Wang Yongzhi’s plaque but all the others—over a dozen—shattered upon contact with the golden light.
“This...”
Wang Yongzhi and the others’ pupils contracted, their eyes filled with terror.
“The River of Death has merged, altering its rules. The tokens have changed too!”
Wang Zhendong’s previously composed expression twisted with shock. Their previously assured escape route had unexpectedly become unusable.
Li Hao froze briefly. The tokens for the Netherworld-level River of Death had failed. He quickly summoned his River of Death List, and sheets of golden paper flew out.
Looking at the information on the golden paper, he saw that the required token for exit was still listed as the “Clear Suppression Plaque.”
However, as he silently tracked its location, the golden light from the paper pointed toward the darkness outside the small town.
Li Hao was stunned. The token hadn’t changed, yet it seemed it had.
Wang Zhendong noticed this too. When he saw the golden light leading into the pitch-black mist, his face turned ashen.
Wang Yongzhi and the others also understood the implication. Previously calm, they now trembled uncontrollably.
The token was inside the Hell-level River of Death! Didn’t that mean their escape route was completely blocked?!
“How could this happen...”
Despair appeared in someone’s eyes. Despite their attempts to suppress it, they couldn’t hide their panic.
Wang Yongzhi’s face turned deathly pale. What he had thought would be a triumphant journey had turned into a disaster that trapped everyone. As head of the family, it was his failure in judgment.
“Wait here. I’ll give it a try,” Wang Zhendong said grimly. He could no longer afford to hesitate. Compressing his Dao Domain to cover only himself, his gaze sharpened.
“It doesn’t seem we’ve ventured too deep yet. I’ll test whether my Dao Domain can withstand the rules of the Hell-level River of Death!”
As he spoke, he charged toward the edge of the black mist outside the small town.
As he approached the boundary between the town and the mist, the darkness seemed to sense his presence. Tendrils of inky black power reached out, coiling around Wang Zhendong’s body.
Wang Zhendong unleashed his full blood energy, compressing his Dao Domain tightly around him. Using the rules of the Dao Domain, he countered the rules of the Hell-level River of Death.
Before long, he took a step into the edge of the Hell-level River of Death.
The surrounding black mist recoiled slightly, as if oppressed by his presence.
However, more of the dark power surged forward, wrapping around him like countless claws, tearing at his Dao Domain.
With a roar, Wang Zhendong erupted with power. The rules within his Dao Domain clashed violently against the rules of the River of Death. Yet, his Dao Domain was compressed tighter and tighter.
Suddenly, a black tendril morphed into a sharp spear and stabbed toward his back.
A hole was torn in his Dao Domain, allowing the black mist to pour in. Wang Zhendong’s body convulsed, the veins on his face bulging in a sickly purplish-blue.
His heart trembled. Was this the power of Hell’s rules? Even with his Dao Domain, he could only last for two breaths of time.
And this was only at the edge of the Hell-level River of Death!
Whoosh!
Wang Zhendong’s body quickly retreated as he tried to withdraw. However, the surrounding black mist seemed to detect his intent, surging to envelop him. Tendrils of darkness coiled around his limbs, and despite his desperate mental commands to retreat, his body was instead propelled forward, deeper into the mist—several dozen meters further in an instant.
The rules of the Netherworld-level River of Death appeared to have been assimilated, manifesting within this Hell-level River of Death.
Wang Zhendong’s pupils constricted as he realized the terrifying nature of the Hell-level River of Death.
It didn’t adhere to a single set of rules but instead... many!
Moreover, some of these rules remained unknown, as he had only identified the ones familiar from the Netherworld-level River of Death. Restraining his thoughts, he clung to a single belief: move forward.
To his shock, his body actually began surging forward, as if propelled by his intent, rather than pulling back.
The rules had shifted again!
A chill spread through Wang Zhendong’s heart. Not only were there multiple rules at play, but they also alternated unpredictably, shifting from moment to moment. This meant the Hell-level River of Death offered no discernible pattern to its rules, leaving one to face them head-on.
As these realizations sank in, the surrounding black power seeped into his body, rapidly draining his strength and vitality.
He could vaguely hear the anxious shouts of Wang Yongzhi and the others in the distance.
Wang Zhendong wanted to turn back, but his head refused to obey, and his body alternated between retreating and surging forward, oscillating under the shifting rules.
An eerie sensation crept into his mind, as if something alive was orchestrating these rules from within the Hell-level River of Death.
Just as he reached his limit and prepared to unleash his ultimate trump card, an overwhelming surge of energy swept in from behind him.
The oppressive black power that had enveloped him melted away like snow under the sun, retreating at an incredible speed.
The force binding him was abruptly released.
A strong, slender hand grabbed his arm.
Turning his head, Wang Zhendong saw multiple layers of Dao Domains covering his body.
One layer, two layers, three layers, four layers...
The Dao Domains stacked atop one another, radiating a terrifying might.
These rules, however, didn’t suppress him. Instead, they shielded him, isolating his body from harm.
The inky black mist struck the outermost Dao Domain repeatedly, trying to infiltrate it, but it was thoroughly blocked.
Wang Zhendong counted ten layers in total!
“Go.”
Li Hao pulled him back and flung him toward the small town behind them. “Take care of them and wait for me.”
With these words, Li Hao took a step forward, passing Wang Zhendong and plunging into the dense black mist.
