Chapter 146: We Can’t Even Read the Fars Empire’s Script, So Why Bother with Newspapers?

Charlot nearly fell off the wall upon hearing this excuse. He couldn’t help but roar, “Do you mean to tell me you don’t read the newspapers from within Fars Empire?”

The Redback Bear warrior wielding the meteor hammers grumbled, “We don’t even know the Farsian script, how are we supposed to read the newspaper!?”

“Human! Die!”

With a swift flip of his hands, his meteor hammers suddenly doubled in speed. The twin hammers flashed like lightning, crisscrossing in rapid succession, shattering the air and producing a thunderous roar.

Charlot gathered his energy and shouted, “Grand Duke Ferdinand has been assassinated!”

“The Behemoth Principality has declared war on South Seraph, and Byron has also declared war on Behemoth. The great empires are already at war—what are you all doing here now?”

The Redback Bear warrior with the meteor hammers was visibly shocked. He yanked his weapons back and growled, “Human, are you deceiving us?”

Charlot hadn’t expected that even with the battle already underway, Fars, Byron, and the Black Phoenix Dynasty had all declared war, yet assassins were still arriving late to the scene.

Byron, the Black Phoenix Dynasty, the Southern Orc Tribes, and South Seraph had all signed the New Order International Alliance pact, and yet there were still assassins arriving only now.

Charlot spread his hands and said, “Grand Duke Joseph has already succeeded Ferdinand. He has led Behemoth’s army into battle against the South Seraph restorationists.”

“What orders did you receive that made you arrive at Machubi only now?”

“Grand Duke Ferdinand has been buried for quite some time.”

The dozen or so Redback Bear warriors immediately erupted into chaotic shouting: “The funeral is already over? We really arrived too late? We didn’t even get a chance to act—how did Ferdinand die? I don’t believe it! This human must be lying…”

Charlot observed these warriors. They seemed more disappointed about missing the banquet than failing their mission. With that in mind, he explained further, “Grand Duke Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated by South Seraph’s assassins using extraordinary firearms. Yes, they were killed on the spot. Even after their deaths, there were attempts to attack their coffins. If you don’t believe me, I can take you to Ferdinand’s Mostar Castle or even Strasbourg…”

As he said this, Charlot broke into a cold sweat. These were assassins sent to kill Grand Duke Ferdinand, and now he was offering to take them to Strasbourg or Mostar Castle. If he succeeded in delivering them, it would certainly be a great achievement.

Though, admittedly, it wouldn’t surpass his feat of defeating the Byron riders and “retaking” Silver Dove Castle, but it was still enough to earn him a promotion.

The Redback Bear warrior wielding the meteor hammers stepped forward and said, “I, Big Bear, do not believe you. We must verify the truth ourselves.”

Charlot dug into his ear and said, “You can trust me. We are allies.”

“I am not human. I am Byronian.”

Well, although 99% of Byronians were indeed human, Charlot was certain these Redback Bear warriors wouldn’t find any flaw in his statement. They weren’t like online readers who enjoyed nitpicking errors in a novel.

As expected, the warriors visibly relaxed upon hearing that Charlot was Byronian. Big Bear, the meteor hammer wielder, said, “Show us proof!”

Charlot activated his Stardust Battle Energy. With a casual swipe of his hand, a stone on the wall split cleanly in two, the cut surface as smooth as a mirror—this was the Arsilo family’s secret technique, the Blade of Emptiness.

Big Bear gave a slight nod. Even true blood clans had been deceived by Blood Glory before, let alone these beastmen. He immediately believed Charlot and exclaimed, “I believe you. However, I only believe that you are Byronian. As for Grand Duke Ferdinand’s death, we must verify it ourselves.”

Charlot called out, “I can lead the way!”

Big Bear nodded slightly and replied, “Very well! I do not yet know your name, Byronian.”

Without hesitation, Charlot answered, “Kainan. My name is Kainan.”

“My ancestors also carried orc blood, but it’s too diluted for me to cultivate orc combat energy.”

This statement won over the Redback Bear warriors considerably. A burly warrior, over 3.5 pimi tall and clad in beast-hide armor, stepped forward and said, “I am their captain. You may call me Hundred Bears. When I was born, my mother dreamed of the Eternal and Illusory Dragon. It was destined that I would lead a hundred bears, and thus, I was given this name.”

Charlot mused to himself, “Your bear mother must have been bad at math. If she dreamed of one of the Nine True Gods, the Eternal and Illusory Dragon, shouldn’t she have named you Ten Thousand Bears instead of Hundred Bears?”

Hundred Bears let out a low growl and said, “Strasbourg is too dangerous, and beastmen are unwelcome there. We won’t go. You will take us to Mostar Castle—I must see Ferdinand’s corpse with my own eyes.”

Charlot thought to himself, “Do you plan to dig up his grave?”

“Grand Duke Ferdinand and his wife have already been buried.”

Under normal circumstances, confirming Ferdinand’s assassination could be done simply by checking a few newspapers. However, these Redback Bear warriors were illiterate and stubborn. If even one of them had a bit of common sense, they wouldn’t have arrived at Machubi so late.

Charlot didn’t think he could convince them otherwise. Regardless, taking them to Mostar Castle would still be a great merit, no matter how ridiculous the reasoning behind it was.

Of course, Charlot couldn’t leave immediately—he still needed to complete the Machubi Fortress Labyrinth mission.

The reason he gave the Redback Bear warriors was: “Behemoth and South Seraph are currently at war. Traveling to Mostar Castle might require crossing battle lines. Although I know you are fearless warriors, unnecessary battles should be avoided.”

“Moreover, you all stand out too much. I need to prepare disguises for you. You can easily pass as demon hunters.”

Both Hundred Bears and Big Bear found Charlot’s reasoning very persuasive. In fact, it was so convincing that they felt it was undeniably logical. They had endured countless hardships on their journey from the south, facing constant obstacles. They weren’t afraid of battle, but even asking for directions was a challenge. They had taken numerous wrong paths and gone hungry countless times—it had been an absolute ordeal.

Having a Byronian handle their “logistics” sounded absolutely perfect!

Charlot had briefly considered whether he should kill these bear warriors, but he had recently noticed a bottleneck in his cultivation.

Having faced the divine presence of evil gods on multiple occasions, the spiritual awakenings he gained from those experiences had helped him advance to the seventh rank, a mid-tier transcendent. However, his training speed had now returned to the “normal” level—meaning he was only progressing as fast as an ordinary “genius.”
