I wonder, is Carter genuinely as talented as Lance is saying, or is this part of his scheme? If it is part of his manipulation, then is he lying outright or just exaggerating? It has bearing on the present not only in that it's revealing of Carter's mental state (we already know he's a ticking time bomb, but are his ambitions built on lies or on actual talent which may hold out a little bit longer before giving?) but also as a way to gauge Carter's actual skill level for matches, once we start seeing those. Of course, the stakes of the matches circle back to the former point anyway, but still-- it may have implications for Ruben and Scott's arcs?

The way he emphasize that they aren't there to make carter conscious of that and then compliments him is really fucked up but effective way to make this poor boy feel like nobody cares for him save for Lance. It really freak me out, but that's because it shows how easy it's to manipulate someone, especially Innocent trusting child.

It is sometimes hard for me to read about them, but it is important to know about it all. Like everyone else, I do want to swoop in and rescue Carter before more happens to him.

2023-06-19 01:08:16 +0000 UTCI really like seeing how differently carter is acting now, it shows that even though he can’t outright reject any interaction with the coach he’s much more reserved and only interacts when necessary + stays at arm's length from him, he just does what he’s asked but doesn’t show his personality or feelings and engages in conversation like before, after the assault Carter, like many other kids, can’t necessarily cut all contact with these adults but they do realise what happened wasn’t right and are trying to distance themselves as much as they could. I know it’s only shown briefly in this excerpt but I think it’s well done. I really hope carter’s parents start acting like it bc being neglected (emotional neglect and not helped/guided or not interacting with your child a lot is neglect) is already hard enough cuz it forces a kid to figure shit out by themselves that is just too much to handle but especially considering he’s even more vulnerable now that a pedocriminal has his eye on him :( I just feel for him and I relate to his feelings even though the situations were different
