For bonus materials this month we're giving Star Cluster and Constellation patrons another look at our middle grade graphic novel submission! :D This is super secret stuff so be sure to keep it hush hush! ✨✨
This story has gone through many changes since we started conceptualizing it. but this one was the most extreme. Some of the feedback we received from being on submission is that a softer, simpler style would have broader appeal. So we said ok why not, lets try it out!
One thing we didn't realize is that changing styles is actually really hard! It requires you to relearn how you draw things and think about things totally differently! So something we though would only take a little tweaking actually flipped us on our heads!
We weren't happy with our first attempts but after a few more tries, we came up with something we liked. So we did a character sheet and the comic page above. While we liked what we were able to come up with, we felt like we sort of lost a little of what we liked in the first pages. So we decided next time we would try to blend the two.
It's always good to be flexible as an artist, but it's also important to stand your ground and let your uniqueness shine through! If we always follow the trends how will the industry grow in different directions? And styles go in and out of fashion, why get stuck always chasing the next trend? I guess what we learned is that it's important to find a balance. For us that balance is trying to make a book that we love but at the same time, make something an average kid would pick up just from the look of it.
Anyways, we may have some exciting news to share with you all in the next few months. But remember you guys are the only ones who can see this, so for now lets keep it that way~ 😉✨✨
