Sagittaire Concept Sketch

Finally I have another sketch to show off!
Apologies $1 patrons, I've not had many sketches to show lately as work has swung more to the 3D side. I'll throw some 3D render sets towards your tier if the drought continues.

The Sagittaire is a favorite of mine, also a favorite of bossman Loren as he requested a redesign from me. We were just waiting for a reason to do it, which recently came through. No, I wont tell you what it's for :P

I've painted the Sagi twice before for commissions, and I've always loved the old TRO 3067 cover with it when I was young. So many gun barrels, lasers beaming from everywhere, the simple yet interesting pizza slice torso and digitigrade legs.
My biggest struggle was deciding how much to break from the sharp simple torso shape and cockpit glass. Wondering if the mech loses its charm if fully modernized. I think I managed to find a good middle ground on this one.

What do you think?

Sagittaire Concept Sketch

Comments

Yep!

Anthony Scroggins

It’s going to look good with the Davion sword on it.

John Hudson

Could we have a 3D render of this model, now that the news are out?

Bolththrower

Hot damn, you made it look good! To my eye the old Sagittaire, besides the slightly wonky art perspective, always looked like a cool hull dreadfully overwhelmed by its guns. Somehow you made it look good without halving the size of those guns!

Robert Pavelchek

Honestly not my most liked design, but yours looks good.

Trevor R.N.

I just want to see the Hornet, Falcon, Hermes II, and the Whitworth, Shogun, and Imp! :-D

Robert Moore

Hey stop reminding me of my shortcomings! :D

Anthony Scroggins

Sadly my favorite Sagittaire story was fighting against one in an open. Forrested terrain and I have a squad of Pumas. They get a set of shots off including a head shot. Commence the sight of this Assault Mech chasing a squad of infantry in heavy woods and missing because of woods + jumping + bloody infantry. *fwoom goes the mech, missing everything* Infantry *ping ping ping ping*

Matthew Morris

Are we going to get to see more mechs this week?

Robert Moore

I can't believe that I accidentally missed the email notification until I found it recently (D'oh!) :P Anyways, this is just amazing!

Sapphirus

I like what you've done with the back half of the toso, but I'm not a fan of the cockpit changes, although they make sense from a usability perspective, it takes away from the unique look of the mech. The rest of the torso changes (esp the slight curve) look great though.

David

Goes to Shimmering Swords' Deviantart page and re-reads the "Headquarters Guard" caption... I share that wish !

TIM STRAUVEN

Purely coincidental, I assure you ;)

Andrew McKenna

A davion wanting one? Shocking :D

Anthony Scroggins

Poor fafnir t-rex arms.

Anthony Scroggins

The cockpit was an interesting arrangement of panels but them all being on a flat plane made them kind of pointless. I think overall this method of breaking up the facings rather than reducing their number is the best call.

Anthony Scroggins

It's certainly a unique looking mech that I'm sure many don't like. I also don't find the Bloodkite terrible in concept and I know most people hate that mech haha.

Anthony Scroggins

Naturally, if it gets to a model you can be sure it'll get the proper scale treatment.

Anthony Scroggins

Don't be fooled, the ST bolt on guns are just as bolted on as always haha. Their mounts to the cylinder joints will be plenty solid though.

Anthony Scroggins

For these sketches they can sometimes look taller than the final will be when it has a pose. Most depiction of this mech previously are in very deep poses, but still have a decent amount of leg to go around. Definitely intentional on reducing the arm fins. I feel the torso bulges provide enough flair haha.

Anthony Scroggins

Leg ratio is something I'll be looking at when it gets a 3D model. For the lasers, it's always important to consider how much bulk armor could add, being such a heavy mech. The lengths of the barrels are in line with previous mechs like the Vulture, just a lot more armored up. End of the day though, it's all about what looks cool.

Anthony Scroggins

Good chance of that. I forget if I've done anything else obscure in the far past that counts.

Anthony Scroggins

This thing looks fantastic! I will definitely be picking it up once its in plastic!

Andrew McKenna

Needs more dakka!

Chris

Looks good but ill echo Blacknight about the leaning pounce like stance being crucial to evoke the beastly nature of the machine. Right now it stands too tall but im guessing this is just the T-pose so I'm not too concerned. I dont mind the size of the barrels. In fact I'd rather them be larger than too small and end up with the same problem the iwm Fafnir had.

Christopher Eastwood

I like the added chamfer to the topside. It's a major change to the cockpit and I could see it bothering some fans, but I think it works. I'll join the "guns too big" chorus. I liked the arm wings and they're totally lost amongst those barrels. The legs are fine, though.

Carlos Sempere

One of my favorite mechs from 3067, love seeing it cleaned up but keeping the original shape. This is a great take on a beloved modernish design.

Moonlight Grimoire

Loved the Sagi the first time I saw it on the 3067 cover, and I like this version too! In fact, I think it looks even better than the original - it reminds me a bit of the air gunship from the Avengers now. If I had a couple of minor comments, it would be cool to see slightly more prominent arm fins and slightly smaller guns.

Zachary Parliman

I love what you did with it, especially the size of the laser housings. Hope we see more Civil War era stuff soon.

Raymond White

I have to confess that the Sagitaire never „spoke“ to me. That are too many muzzles and not enough Mech. I understand the role and the idea behind it but perhaps it isn’t my style of playing BT and so I dislike it. I find your try better in many ways but still not good… Sorry

Jürgen Frey

my issue has never been with the art or the record sheet, but the Miniature being overlarge and physically unbalanced. it looks like you cleaned up and compressed some over the overexaggerated physical features, like the cockpit window looking like the front of a concert hall. I would love to see a 3D Render of this in comparison to the Atlas or Banshee just to get a size/bulk reference

James Bixby

Looks great, but I'll Echo what Henning said about the lasers needing scaling down a bit. The mediums are almost the same size as the PPC! I would about halve the diameter of all the laser barrels (the length looks fine) and add some of that bulk to the legs.

Stewart Spencer

I share the same enthusiasm for the Sagittaire exactly due to that cover by Franz Vohwinkel (not that there's much more artwork of it), even though I always forget how to write the name of the damn thing! There's a really good balancing act here, the mechs' main characteristic shapes and details are all there but are less "flat". The almost conical/blunderbuss laser muzzles somehow work and I'm glad you kept those. Really excited to see more redesigns from this time period!

BFenix

I have personally had Loren stomp all over my face with one of these things. (Actually two of these things). The update looks good. The PPC looks a bit more integrated and a bit less randomly bolted on.

Peter Shah

This mech looks fantastic! This looks better than the original TRO image. This is one of my favorite designs!

Joseph Muniz Jr

Just cant make aimed shots with the TC and Pulse lasers is all now. The benefits of both still stack and can still make aimed shots with the PPC.

Heavyguard

Looks good , but I'll agree with most and say the legs could use some beefing up.

Kanrei13

I think this looks very good. In fact it isn't even much different from the old one which is good. My only critique is that maybe the legs look a bit too long and uninteresting here, even though it now matches the proportions of most other mechs. Any longer and this art would start to resemble the Gekko mechs from Metal Gear Solid 4. The Sagittaire as you obviously know would often be presented with a bit of a forward lean that gave it an animalistic bestial vibe, as though it's about to pouce and crush you. Just a little bit of that vibe missing here. Also it looks like it lost the arm fins, which also takes a way a bit of the old tribal animal look. Slightly bigger feet and talons for toes might be cool to give it a more predatory look again. Perhaps the new design ethos was trying to reduce those sorts of fancy bling flair elements (but then why does the Marauder II still have wings?).

Blacknight

I like what you did here, but for me it would be a first step. The torso looks better, but the laser barrels are still really big for just some pulse lasers...it´s an assault mech and imho especially the med pls and lrg pls lasers are too large. The torso/leg ratio in regards to size is a bit off - slightly larger torso or smaller legs maybe? Just my two cents - i like the sketch and just wanted to provide some view from my side. ;)

Henning Boessler

Love it! Am I correct that this is the newest Mech redesign you've done going by Introduced date? I don't recall other Civil War or later designs.

Ed M

I did not see that coming at all. The Saggitaire is a great design in theory, but suffered from being obsoleted in seconds by rules changes. Great work there on the redesign

Alex F

This is perfect. The huge chin-mount gun always bugged me. Nice to see you've reduced it a bit here. I also like what you've done with the previously flat as a pancake canopy.
