Elemental Concept Sketch

Because of the amazing patron turnout we've seen in mere months, and the gracious pledge upgrades last week, have an Elemental!

Now be warned, I've had zero locked in CGL feedback on this one yet, so it may be subject to a lot of change. I expect the Elemental design to be polarizing, but I historically have a passion for power armor outside of Battletech so I hope this keeps.

Feel free to give impressions all around, but I'm curious what you think about me lengthening and "de-ugly-ing" the SRM launchers. I think the rest of the suit still sells what you're looking at.
Heavy inspiration goes to an old fanart concept from "Tabnir" on DA.

Ok, I'll take 125 of them! Just keep them BELOW the size threshold of the current online exclusive Elementals!!! Those are already huge, at 17mm to the tops of the missile packs!

Joshua Bressel

I tried painting up an Elemental based on your new design. I like it.

Damen DeLeenheer

Maybe bring the chest β€˜ribbing’ up a bit, but otherwise I really like this. It seems like a functioning infantry suit now!

I'm on the fence about the missile launchers. I'd have to see them from the rear to give a good opinion. The codpiece I'm not sure of. Looks like the legs have to be spread considerably as is. I'd prefer there to be no armor underneath, with the protection being from the front and rear only, like it appeared in the early artwork: https://www.sarna.net/wiki/File:Compendium_ClansCRS_Elemental.png

I always thought the original design of the missile rack was a homage to Starship Troopers. The powered suits there had what was described as a "Y-Rack", and the original Elemental's missile launcher had a vague Y-shape to it.

OG Elementals had a two toed boot, also, as does the Atlas.

Raymond White

I love it, although I have noticed a little bit of a theme where you like having two toes hahaha (This, the Atlas). I would maybe stick to more of a solid toe boot to be honest. You crank out Some Roger Bear or Wraith Battle Armor, give them claws and toes galore hahahaha

Andrew McKenna

Really really nice! Keeping the feel of the original design but with more modern art and looks.

Steven Cross

I like the design in a general sort of way. It keeps a lot of the original design elements but then adding modern elements into the design. I especially like how it is more bulky and robust with all the curved lines instead of looking stick figure like the original. I don't like the missile launchers though they look more like energy weapons to me,

MechaParade

the body is great but I am not sold on the SRM Tubes they don't look like they have a reload in them. I would rater the two separate launchers be joined in a way the Hauberk or Grenadier has. Maybe this works as an alternate for the Falcons Fireproof models. another alternative is to make the Elementals Launchers semi retractable and joined on the small of the back when empty or not in use,

James Bixby

I just like it and would buy it immediately! Looking forward to more cool mechs and possibly also BA.

Henning Boessler

Although there's some character and charm to old BT designs such as the Elemental BA, I always thought they looked pretty disproportionate and statuesque for something that's supposed to jump jet around and latch on to mechs. I'm happy to say everything is pretty much fixed in this sketch, I'm glad you took inspiration from Tabnir's rendition!

BFenix

Oh man, I love it! I actually really like how the torso seems more froglike. I honestly hope that CGL doesn't change a thing.

Raymond White

Love it! Silhouette is still very elemental, but much more modern and less Robbie the robot!

Stewart Spencer

That's superb. Modern, but clearly an Elemental 😁

Andrew Dickinson

Love it.

Phil

Feet and launchers are too much of a departure for me - but I can easily guess the rationalization. Overall I really dig it.

Thanks for sharing this image Anthony! I love power armour and I love Elementals and I'm ecstatic that these are being overhauled and included in the Kickstarter...superb!!! I love what you've done with the SRM pack, it looks much better than the original "Triangle-on-a-back" and having them sit more forward on the shoulders offers a little more reality in terms of the weight-bearing of them being more overhead the centre of balance. My personal requests for these would be; 1 - I think the chest protrudes just a little too much, I'd like to see the chest protrude less...maybe something closer to chest of the Elemental II Battle Armour from XTRO The Clans... 2 - With all the superb efforts you've put into keeping all the Mechs in-scale with each other, something that has been sorely needed for a very long time, it would be a shame to not have the Elementals kept in-scale with the Mechs, so I'd like to very much see them kept in-scale with the Mechs. 3 - Not sure if this would be too expensive on the mold creation side of things, but I'd really like to see different poses, perhaps 3 different poses if at all possible. Certainly using hot water to bend arms and legs will allow a single plastic sculpt to have a small amount of variation added to it, but if there were multiple sculpts to begin with, then this would allow for some great looking Elemental units. 4 - Yeah, some Inner Sphere Standard Battle Armour would also be a very welcome addition to the Kickstarter.

Danny

Like the redesign, always hated the original personally. For such advanced technology, it looked pretty terrible IMHO. New one looks hot though!

Love it! And I’m really happy about the new launchers. Definitely a design improvement!

Jakob Fredensborg

Iooks cool with the longer launchers. Seems like it would still have a similar silhouette of downward triangle at the shoulders if you looks head on which I like.

AHHHH I kind of miss the dorky V launcher... still man, this suit is golden. I really like it.

The ribbed lower abdomen seems a little odd but everything else is amazing

Mitchell Berthelson

my old school mindset kind of misses the old space/diving boots, but these actually make more sense for scaling mechs, etc. I would love a star of these to go with Star Captain Myers' Summoner!

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

Love it. The Jeff Laubenstein Elemental is for me the most iconic image of the Clan invasion era. This design is a worthy successor. It’s all about the visor for me, and this design keeps the menacing β€˜V’. I sure hope we see some of these along with all the Omnis. I would love to develop some Elemental characters.

Damen DeLeenheer

There's a little cheating, but you can indeed fit a person in this one :D The more recent official cutaway art that was done showing the open chest was super cringy is it only showed that it doesn't work.

Anthony Scroggins

The BattleTech FB page recently posted, and talked about, the Steve Venters art on the cover of the Compendium, that introduced a lot of people to the Elemental. In that image it was damaged, revealing a face inside, to clearly show it was human-sized with someone inside. This art doesn't need that. With no reference, the shape and proportions just scream out that this is power armour with a person inside.

I really like how you "modernized" the look of the armor here. From top to bottom: - The missile launchers look nice and updated. The old art often had you questioning where the rest of the missile was stored (unless they were meant to look like Bullet Bill from Super Mario. lol) - Maybe make the missile launchers look more modular? Those did get swapped out every now and then (depending on mission) in the lore if I'm not mistaken. - I like the how the general aesthetic of the limbs were swapped out. It looks less "diving suit" and more "combat armor". Makes the original art look like the prototype as opposed to the final mil-spec model. - The chest, I think, deserves a special mention. Reminds me of the cuirasses of old. And that's enough gushing from me. Outstanding work as always, sir :D

From the back there will be a clear transition between the packs and the central power/jump unit.

Anthony Scroggins

While I could make the old boxes passable with bevels, it's just not forward thinking IMO. These elongated launchers would appeal even to non BT gamers looking for infantry figures.

Anthony Scroggins

The Elemental idea was floating in multiple peoples brains in tandem, and eventually decided it's be good additional spice for the kickstarter. They go well with the mountain of omni-mechs on offer. Who knows where we'll go from here.

Anthony Scroggins

Dude.... so much that. And from what Ive seen from yalls current work the scale will be great. Right now I mostly use the IWM resculpts and the clicky elementals.

That's a nice evolution of the original concept. The missile packs look a little too integrated though. Can you refine that linkage? Keep up the great work!

Much like the original but less wasteful on space, it can fit a 2nd missile under the first. Not that BT has ever gone out of its way to explain how LRM mechs hold all those missiles hahaha.

Anthony Scroggins

*squee* WOW! Love the feet, legs, torso and shoulders. While I like the missile launchers, I kinda miss the boxy old ones . . . though that just may be my nostalgia showing . . .

I really like it. They look beefed up as an Elemental should be. I do like the SRM launchers. Also I second maybe some Gray Death armor lol

Dan Hegarty

I'm a big fan of the changes to the back assembly compared to the original.

I never got the Toad reference until I drew it myself and noticed the mouth and derpy eyes.

Anthony Scroggins

With powered armor being done are you sure there are no plans for some vehicle updates? I admit I'm a little iffy on my desires for that as there are some great vehicle miniatures that maybe shouldn't be changed.

Tyler Erickson

That looks great! I'd be down with that desgin.

Joseph Muniz Jr

Really, it is so close to the original that it could be swapped into any book from the 90s and I don't think we would notice. The missiles do throw you off a bit. The only suggestion I can offer is trying to show where the second round of SRMs would be stored before the packs are jettisoned.

Oh this is freaking AWESOME!! Dude please, please, PLEASE do some Inner Sphere suits ESPECIALLY the Gray Death Scout Armor and maybe the old SLDF Night Hawk.

Tyler Erickson

I think that looks great, a good update that brings it more in line with modern battle armor. It also looks more like a β€œToad” than the original, which I like.
