The Big Whammy

I have a 3D scene set up for us to decide on accurate scales for our miniatures, and it's starting to get very crowded in here. This is the scene used to scale our recent box sets, which I don't think had more than 1mm error on each mini.

I've shown off a number of Clan mechs, now enjoy a peek at the whole lot. Some of these models aren't quite finished yet, but they're there. Might add another soon too.

One big scale question to answer with the Clan mechs is this abundance of squat torso'd, chicken legged designs. If you go strictly by volume they end up very short among their humanoid counterparts, so we're trying out making them10-20% more voluminous (just a few mm taller). The Nova there, the shortest medium mech, is actually one of the "biggest", same goes for that tiny Adder.

Fantastic work. What a great time to start a Battletech collection. Have you considered remaking the mechs from CGL's old intro Box? In particular, the Jenner and Jaegermech look very dates. I would love to see meaner and tougher versions of the Black Knight and Axman.

I'm doing official work here, so no pirate/illegal models.

Anthony Scroggins

Are these models CGL is working on or are they under other names at another online store?

Andrew McKenna

It's certainly one I'd like to do.

Anthony Scroggins

Vehicles would be awesome!

Henning Boessler

Are we gonna see a Warhawk for the Clans?

Tyler Erickson

Has CGL considered doing vehicle touchups as well?

Tyler Erickson

Were is the Marauder II?

Robert Moore

I really appreciate that a focus is being on scale. That´s the old problem with CBT minis: Some minis just are too big, some to flimsy and small for their weight. Compare something like the old Ostroc to a Razorback or Anubis and you just don´t comprehend why the more delicate mini should be approx. double the weight. It´s great scaling is being done now...or at least some comparision betweeen mechs before going live with the minis.

Henning Boessler

I think the way the old crow kept the arms narrow by keeping them above the hips wasn't a good look, so it needs to gain a lot of width to finally let those arms hang/aim down. Guns got a little girthier, but a lot of that bulk is running with the MW4 style Ryoken fists. Baby hands just weren't working.

Anthony Scroggins

I'd say it's highly unlikely to happen at all. People can kitbash on the Lynx if they want though.

Anthony Scroggins

As far as differentiation? I think it'll be more apparent from different angles. Aside from the well debated leg positioning, they've always been very similar mechs, only separated by a little tonnage and jump jets.

Anthony Scroggins

You could call it that yeah. We've hit almost all of the unseen, or have plans for the rest. Sadly I don't have control over when CGL will give IWM casting rights on these, I'd like to see that asap.

Anthony Scroggins

I love all of em but that Stormcrow. It feels like a Nova with a taller back portion. The shoulders just seem way too broad. I can appreciate the bigger guns, too, but they just seem so cartoony.

Raymond White

Still going to hold you to the Fire Moth. Those arms need to stay up!

Man the Stormcrow and Nova are throwing me off. That Executioner is on point, though.

So should we consider this Wave 1 of the resculpts? Also when are you gonna send some molds to Iron Wind miniatures so we can start buying metal/pewter versions of the mechs? I wanna build my starter lance, 1 Battlemaster, 1 Thunderbolt, 2 Shadow Hawks.

Tyler Erickson

If you haven't tried yet, you can download the pic to see it up a little closer. Valkyrie and Stinger.

Anthony Scroggins

What are the lights between the ADR and COM, and the MLX and LCT? Seriously looking forward to seeing these for sale, and the rest of the classics.

Joe M Emmert

Soon :)

Anthony Scroggins

Ostscout does have 3D but it wasn't done "in house" to my file type, quality, or scale standards, so it wont go in here. We want our scale standard to be internal and tightly controlled, so not even the big list of Alex Immerzeel's IWM sculpts that I oversaw will be added either.

Anthony Scroggins

And the wasp!

Robert Moore

I noticed that the ostscout wasn't in the line up

Robert Moore

It's definitely going to be a good time for Clan players to build of forces, and a great time for those looking to start.

Anthony Scroggins

We definitely haven't solved the weight to volume ratio issue as that has always been admittedly unrealistic, but we can at least make the mechs a little more reasonable among each other.

Anthony Scroggins

Dude I LOVE these, that Stormcrow and Nova look AMAZING. Definitely going to fill out some clan forces. I love keeping the Clans chonky

One thing that's always struck me about BattleTech mechs is how much empty space must be inside them, or how light their components must be. A WWII Tiger II tank managed to cram 75 tons (a top-weight heavy mech) into what is effectively a 10m x 4m x 3m package. It's nice to see mass scale being applied to the various mechs.

Do Want!!

Even the MWO and third-party 3D printed designs never really attracted me. But the new designs made me excited to get back into BattleTech. I just had to own them.

I want them all :3

Steven Cross

Yep. With traditional sculpts you had to make a best guess, and could only do hack edits to proportions along the way. Here we can endlessly fiddle with proportions from beginning to end, and me unifying the modeling team ensures better cross referencing.

Anthony Scroggins

I have recently been selling all of my miniatures that are IIC, Project Phoenix, Dark Age, and only keeping the original designs, and the new box set designs. To me, these new designs, and the very originals, define BattleTech.

Don't worry, plenty more coming in the future. These are just what's on the 3D teams plate right now.

Anthony Scroggins

Thank goodness for computers making it easy to ensure consistent scaling for all of the models. They were all over the place before.

Amazing :D The Lack of Atlas / Highlander / Cyclops / Orion makes me sad though!

Phil

I'll steadily get to them. I've been focusing hard on keeping my modeling team moving the last few weeks.

Anthony Scroggins

That's precisely the goal. Glad you think I'm pulling it off.

Anthony Scroggins

I spy an Executioner, Stormcrow, Grendel, and Mist Lynx that I want to see!

I love everything about this. :) Thank you for sharing. And, obviously, thank you for designing a modern, fresh, yet still "classic-enough" look for Battletech! :)
