Who fears the Devil by Manly Wade Wellman..
(A collection of his Silver John short stories of weird things happening in Appalachia. Several books in the series from the 40's and 50's. )
Conan, Conan of Cimmeria by RE Howard
(The early short stories from Weird Tales, collected and published again by L. Sprague Decamp.)
Godstalk by PC Hodgell
(An amazing book, that starts a series of amazing books. A new one appears every few years.)
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
The Dying Earth by Jack Vance
(Every wonder where the DnD magic system came from?)
On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony
(Death done so well.)
Compleat Enchanter by Pratt and Decamp
(Isekai done right, 50 years ago. The Roaring Trumpet is a favorite of the trilogy.)
The Satanic Mill
(Strange horror/fantasy set in the backdrop of medieval germany.)
Draonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffery
The first book in the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
Swords and Deviltry by Frits Lieber (Fafrd and the Grey Mouser)
Thieves World anthology book 1
Jack the Giant Killer by Charles de Lint
Sandman vol 1 by Neil Gaiman

2023-09-25 15:10:19 +0000 UTCIf it is strictly about introducing someone to the fantasy genre, especially a young person, then I'd actually opt for my favorite book as a kid - Eragon. It introduced many kids in my school to reading and fantasy even though it is not the most polished or original of works. However, if it's for adults, I'd probably suggest the Sword of Truth. Again, not the best work, especially the subsequent titles, but it's a solid starter

2023-09-25 09:50:44 +0000 UTCOn A Pale Horse was such a great book. I found that entire series to be thought provoking beyond just the basics of the story. Truly a master at his craft. Apprentice Adept was an interesting series as well, but not to overload with recommendations from just one author I understand your choice of OAPH.
