AD-Free Episode 531 - A Worrying Trend

On this edition of the Arsenal Vision Post Match Podcast, Elliot (@yankeegunner) is joined first by Clive (@clivepafc) to discuss the larger themes of the loss at Old Trafford with a focus on the selection, the persistent trend of dropping off after taking the lead, and the performances that made it difficult for us to capitalize against a poor united. Then Tim (@stillberto) joins to go through all the incidents one by one before trying to explain some head-scratching performances and why Arsenal drop off. All that and more on this edition of the Arsenal Vision Post Match Podcast.

They are crap right now!

Sorry just to add - I think it’s Arteta’s psychology for each game that’s effecting the players. He was up for Spurs and they played the way they did. He’s clearly a bit deer in the headlights for these big games by virtue of selection and so probably the player / game management for these big ones goes adrift. We need a new sports psychologist to bring some tougher mettle to manager and players…..

Thanks again guys. Listened to this one twice - helped my anxiety! I agree about this game displaying some worrying Arteta neuroses - more than ever we need AW back to help via some mentoring. I’m sure Arteta can be a great manager but he might trip up on his own shadow too many times in these big games for the owners. That would be a shame.

Yes definitely uncertainty there 😂 on another more rewatching the corner Smith Rowe scores off of and Auba is totally tying his shoe or entirely not paying attention when oddgaard plays the ball in - special tactic??

Just to be clear: I still think he’s a very talented player with a lot of upside. I’m just not sure exactly what we have yet. And I’m no entirely sure mikel or odegaard are entirely sure what they want from him yet either

Elliot understand your perspective on Ode - but also think just give him time. We’re expecting him to play a creative 9.5 like Prime 27 y.o Ozil… it’s in him but needs another season

Arteta got this group of players - before he came we had people stealing cash from our club

I like Arteta and want him to succeed at Arsenal, but I very much wonder what another coach can do with this group of players

Technically mature - I know how old he is. Mature and secure. Hey look I’m not giving up on him. I don’t do that to 22 year old players

Elliot I’m glad you mentioned the way Fred initiated the contact for the penalty. I was screaming at the tv replays that it was not a penalty. I just don’t know how referees and pundits/commentators, can’t see this and call it out. Odegaard should not have went to ground, but going to ground is not illegal. That alone is not enough for a penalty. Fred initiated contact. Ps. No excuses, we were shite…etc

Clive, why do you classify Odegaard as a “mature” player like Partey ? He’s 22. How many La liga minutes has he had vs Partey? He’s a kid. He’s only had one legit La Liga season hasn’t he? For me he epitomises the team: amazing technical skill, super exciting to watch, scores some good goals… but glaring howlers (pens vs Man U and Newcastle he got away with). This is trademark of luck of experience. Just needs time like the rest of the young guys. But again it’s not right to stick him with partey / Auba and expect him to enforce his experience on the team.

I think the slow to get back after injury re partey is the case. Elliot was purring about partey pre season, gets injured and hasn’t looked the same. Sam thing was true last year with his injuries.

I was stupid enough to watch the game with a United friend. He slagged Fred from minute 1 and thought it was funny we made him look good

😂 I get that!

Yesterday's instant reaction was too much too soon for me. Maybe now I can stomach it
