Transfer Manifesto Part One - Midfield

Elliot and Clive get together for part one of a three part transfer manifesto. The episode starts by identifying what characteristics make up a successful midfield and what Arsenal should be looking to build. After that, Clive gives his perspective on which players should be moved out. Then, the real business starts with Clive evaluating the current midfield transfer targets and identifying which ones he prefers.

Transfer Manifesto Part One - Midfield

Comments

Having listened to this. Youve convinced me Buendia is the one. So cards upfront i see Saka as an attacking midfielder. As a wingback he was basically operating as a midfielder,he can play 10 and given his attributes,he seems perfect to be an 8 and has imo all the attributes Clive spoke about. So with ESR and Saka playing wing 8 10s,why not bring another? They can all play together but equally you can play 2 of the 3. Maybe even 1 when desperate. We have Martinelli and Pepe in the wings who need to be playing games. So they can be in competition with each other and also the wingers.

New to AV patreon. It was good to hear Clive talking about attributes that we should be looking for in midfield. I was also wondering about other options which could help, 1 person I was keen on is Kalvin Philips from Leeds to partner Partey if we can't get Bissouma. Additional benefit of HG. Also won't we be in same position if we get Anguissa as 3rd midfielder I think he has also chance to be selected for Cameroon (AFCON). Also thinking we should keep AMN atleast till AFCON competition as 4th choice

One commonality I see in all our midfield targets is a strong ability going both ways. To varying degrees all these names have good defensive attributes with the ability to go into offensive transition quickly and effectively. Bissouma strongest off the ball but still has good offensive technique. Partey seems evenly split, and berge seems the most exciting offensively but with competent defensive attributes i.e his frame and strength. Add lokonga to that mix and you have the ability to rotate that midfield without having to drastically alter the team tactically to cater for your specialists I.e xhaka, el neny, ceballos

give berge a chance, he’s a fabulous player !

the bear decision was to become a part of this Patreon family , Clive I owe you a sincere apology, Twitter rant a few weeks back, too much time working alone and too much frustration with circumstances but no excuse for my rudeness mate

Fantastic, insightful and some positivity Clive and Elliot.

I don’t know how to reply to replies Clive 😂 but I’ll just comment again. I agree - the best footage of him is always when he plays for Norway. In terms of squad building it’s also a nice link with Odegaard. If we get MO10 then Berge makes even more sense. Berge plays behind Odegaard for Norway and it works. Berge receives the ball from CDM, finishes his opposing CM, bursts forward for 10-15 metres and then lays it off to Odegaard ahead of him or plays in wider to the touch line winger. This is also why on heat maps he has such a right side bias. It is where he drives too. Anyway, I loved this pod but just felt the Berge analysis was slightly unfair based on what I’ve seen of him. He’s the most exciting option after Bissouma for me - and a 6ft 5 player won’t be pushed about like way too many of our light-8/10s

On Berge I think we need to see him play for Norway - he is so unique profile wise I can’t dismiss him

I agree. I feel if he plays vs Villarreal we could of won the EL

On Sander Berge, I’m not sure analysis was fair. @Elliott you can’t use percentiles as benchmark when Berge hardly played this season. What he offers is he has a first touch that sells his opposing CM, and then bursts into the space where the CM is coming from. He creates broken play and defences running backwards which none of our midfielders do at the moment.

Yes Clive I do listen to all the pods with great interest. Learn a lot from them. Elneny is the least of our problems, but we spend a whole lot of time berating him. I do understand that he lowers the base of this team, but his contributions are not detrimental to the team.

If you listen to the pods I asked for Elneny to play a lot more than he did. Underused IMO criminally and deserved more minutes than Ceballos who is not our player

I don’t rate Diawara mate.

There you go you guys cannot miss a parting shot on Elneny right. Boy you guys hate him. Every player gets a rope but not this guy. He makes the least mistakes, doesn't hide, runs throughout the game, scores from midfield and actually practices it, can do vertical passing but looks like Arteta has told him not to but still you guys cannot avoid taking a dig at him. Talk about fairness.

Elliot and Clive, good discussion. I like the fact that you laid out a vision for the kind of players we need in the midfield and went on to asses each one accordingly. I still say that we are not serious about ACN. Assuming that we sell Xhaka, we will need Bissouma, Lokonga and another one at the base of midfield. Partey, Bissouma and Elneny are off for 8 weeks for sure, we will need two at the base in their absence.

Thoughts on the potential Xhaka transfer? Do y'all rate Amadou Diawara, who is rumored to be a part of a potential swap plus cash transfer for Xhaka with AS Roma.

Onana the two footed keeper on the way lessgoooo!

You had me checking for the red under the bed at the start there, Elliot.

Get in!! I was just starting a football ramble podcast to fill the void. Great timing. Thank you
