Can Video Games Cure Fear? | RKG Halloween Special 2024

Happy Halloween!

We're delighted to bring you this year's Halloween Special: Can Video Games Cure Fear?

Every year we go to Halloween Horror Nights, and you may remember Gav struggles with it a little more than Krupa.

This year we wanted to try make things different. So we spent two months trying to reduce Gav's susceptibility to fear using video games and some 'science'...

Enjoy, spooky slugs!

15 minutes in and I've been cracking up the whole time. This is excellent 🤣

Roberto Padovani

This was so good! Quick question - is there no roundtable hold quiz?

Vikki Greer

This was fantastic, loved every minute ♥

Matthew Edwards

Great job with that lads!! Great watch

Jonathan Cox

3 mins in and I reckon that first scare would have given me a heart attack! Is Gav’s jumpiness above average or is Krupa’s immunity to jump scares out of this world?

Daniel Howlett

alright.. stop the polls... the race for the best video on the internet has been decided. this is absolutely brilliant and I loved every second of it! The only thing I missed was Daniel going through the experiments as well as a control group kinda.. but maaaaaybe that could be waiting for us some time in the future? :)

I have always struggled to play or watch horror games and films. For me, it's always been the fear of the periphery—not what is 'scary' on screen but my unease with how the film or game affects my perception of my own reality. Although not pure horror so to speak, my experience of playing Half-Life Alyx in VR is a very different experience. There are parts of the game which are intensely horror, pitch-black spaces, zombies wandering around, limited ammo, and of course the added intensity of VR. However, being in complete control, and having no periphery of my reality doesn't scare me in the slightest. I have a greater fear reaction playing on a monitor than in immersive VR, the opposite of what I would expect.

Gav, don't beat yourself up. I am not easily scared, but jump scares are shit. It's good to be afraid of things that pop into view surprisingly. Let's just wait a few years and see how Krupa gets murdered by a guy hiding in the closet while you run away out of fear! But, you could get better at not scaring yourself with doors 😉

Rico Scheller

This is brilliant. Well done boys, hard work always pays off ahah.

Daniel Curran

As someone who is very jumpy with certain stimulus I found this a fascinating look into it. Excellent idea for a video and marvellously put together. Hopefully Gav can get a bit of a break from the jump scares for a bit 😂 Well done to everyone involved

Carl Bridgewood

Chaps, this is absolutely incredible work, congratulations on an incredible video!

Joe Ducarreaux
