Shield Up 166: Sock It

This week Krupa and Gav realise they've become video game historians (sort of), take you behind the scenes of our upcoming series, and talk about recipes.

Oh yeah, there's also a Minging or Fair Play involving socks.

As always, send your questions, problems, funny stories and Minging or Fair Plays to: bit.ly/ShieldUp

Stay safe and keep your shield up!

Mister FPGA is a solid shout! Biggest downside (other than getting one as you said) is that you generally can't use the actual game carts, so you have to have a ROM. That said, ROMs aren't hard to find and I have a very favorable opinion of them. But from a legal perspective you have to make your own judgment call. Also, I'd be happy to put one together for y'all if you decide that's a route you want to go and can't find a faster source. :P Been meaning to build up one for myself anyway, and doing two at a time wouldn't be all that much extra work. I mentioned on Discord, but retro gaming/collecting/preservation is a hobby of mine, so I'm happy to help if I can with questions or hardware or anything. :)

Thanks, Phil. This is great advice!

Sounds like a Mister might be the best fit for your retro ambitions, boys. It uses an FPGA instead of emulation. Essentially FPGA is a chip that can be programmed to replicate hardware on an electrical level. The result is much more accurate than traditional software emulation. Best thing about it is it's open-source and very talented folks have developed cores for all kinds of things, from the ZX Spectrum, Atari, Ps1 to arcade boards. It has HDMI output as sell , which will make capturing a breeze for you guys. The downside is that it's a faff to get up and running. Unless you get lucky scoring a pre-built one you'll have to choose the components and build it yourself. Still, it's the only FPGA-based product at this time that supports this large a number of systems. If you're willing to put in the graft it could be a great all-in-one solution for your retro needs . Just an idea :)
