End of an era

Picked up this beautiful old drill press on Friday (the pillar is actually solid round bar) from probably the last (at least that I know of) precision engineering workshop here in Marrickville.

It's a bit of a sad story, but one that's very typical of the area over the last couple of decades. The owner, David, had been running the business for 25 years, until recently the owners of the warehouse he was leasing passed away, and the title was handed down to their children. Almost immediately, the rent was increased by an astronomical margin, and David had no choice but to vacate. He was given 4 weeks notice to move 25 years worth of material and equipment over the Christmas and New year shutdown, when such a task becomes almost impossible.

As a result, tonnes and tonnes of equipment has gone to scrap, and the building is to become a damn pet barn.

Very sad, the loss of manufacturing capabilities and the lack of respect / history for the humans that spent so long in that space
