You're right, googling Star Blazers I find that "Star Blazers is an American animated television series adaptation of the Japanese anime series Space Battleship Yamato" The guy who made Yamato also made a series about a steam train that flies through space, and another about a wooden pirate ship in space, I guess "vehicles that shouldn't be in space, being in space" was his thing xD Americans did strange things when localizing Japanese shows back then. Robotech in 1985 awkwardly edited together 3 completely unrelated robot shows (Macross, southern cross and mospeada) into one long show, also editing it to be kid-friendly. Must have been so much more work than just translating it!

I'm sure we're talking about the same show, marketed under a different name for some reason. It was a 70s anime from Japan dubbed in English. Dad had regular business in Japan back then so he brought it back on videotape, this would have been around 1981 or thereabouts. The version i saw was called Star Blazers but it has to be the same show.

2023-06-05 15:49:54 +0000 UTCInteresting you mention that American show with a battleship in space, there was a 1970s anime (Space battleship Yamato) with the same premise, i wonder if one inspired the other? I like that they try to tell the enemy they are a ship full of civilians and children tbh. I dislike when the protagonists are obviously outmatched but don't even consider surrendering or fleeing. It doesn't work here, but I'm glad they tried, as it makes them fighting against the odds seem more reasonable when they tried the alternative. I think he meant to say "humanoid" not "human" when he said he was a "human from another planet," they're not meant to be descended from humans or anything like that, just aliens with a humanoid form.
