Originally, they were going to kill Anthony Carrigan's character off in the pilot when Barry shot him and his partner this character was supposed to die, but Hader and the producers liked the actor's performance so much that they added him to the main cast. I can see the trajectory of where the show was going without him during the first season but after that would have been a completely different show without him. Kind of reminds me of when I heard that Jessie and Hank were supposed to die during the first season of Breaking Bad. It's difficult to imagine the show without that because they were such important fixtures of the show going forward, they were the secondary protagonists of the show.
