[NR] Looser Laws - Chapter 734

The eye runes surge open and a lime green light emanates from them. ~Who dares call upon the Lady, sister of the Moon, Kind deity who watches over all?!~

Jason raises an eyebrow, “Well, that’s a fun way to talk. Anyway, I call upon the Moon’s sister by way of prior connections. Twice she has appeared before me because of my potential and now I request her aid once more to unlock even more of my potential.”

The wings of the being shudder along their length, making the sound of metal rubbing against metal. ~You would call upon her for such trivialities? By what right?~

Jason, “Who needs a right? I call not because it is due to me or owed. This is simply what I have done. She would answer more than the System would.”

The feather’s still. ~What could you possibly ask for that would require her attention? Your strength is pitiful.~

Jason, “She watched as I purified what Experience I use to level and removed the Systems stats. Now, I would request to unlock talents to make use of the unused experience now that I am in a position to greatly benefit from it.

“I am aiming for talents like Sustained Effort to better allow me to keep up with my training. Last bottleneck, I starred all my stats and I plan to continue doing so going forward. However, without Sustained Effort and generally slowing down my leveling, this will be impossible for me.”

The eye runes close, cutting off the lime green light. ~I shall not bother my master with this request. Though I will raise it to the System. Do not so frivolously call upon Her name again.~

Jason sighs, “And they’re gone.”

Which is true. There was no transition or movement. That being has simply stopped talking and then they weren’t there, the building returned to how it was before.

Jason stands up and stretches before going outside. It was actually still early enough and the others were still up. Courtney poked at the fire, while Rosha and Lily sat together. They look up at his approach and Courtney raises an eyebrow.

Jason shrugs, “Well, I got tier one celestial tech support, as it were. One of their humanoid angel types was sent down to dissuade me from calling on his master. Once I explained why I was calling, they basically waved me off and said they’d pass the request to the System themselves.”

Rosha, “Will they?”

Jason, “They should. I’ll get a confirmation message of the request being raised to the System the morning after it happens.”

Rosha, “Why not right away?”

Jason shrugs, “Probably just so they can be batched together.”

Courtney nods, “Partly that. Though there’s also the angle that the System is soothing their egos. Otherwise, the instant notification of a report would ruffle the feathers of the various powerful beings who fill the role. Not that I’m claiming to actually know this. Unlike some things, how the divine beings of NeoRealm function is a tightly kept secret.”

Jason, “Well, they probably just break the mold. While not inherently trans-dimensional, deities can be and so are partly disconnected from some of the looser laws of a universe.”

Courtney, “Looser? Pretty certain that isn’t how universal Laws work.”

Jason shrugs, “Instead of thinking about things like gravity. The base rules that the universe runs on. Think more like the strange powers now present.

“They weren’t always there. They aren’t an inherent part of the universe. But they do now represent laws of the universe, likely building on some pre-existing bit of magic. After all, for the supernatural to enter the dimension and not end the world, there had to be some pre-existing laws to build on.”

Courtney, “Anyway, how stuffy was the being that came around to ask you to kindly stop shouting for attention?”

Jason shrugs, “Good for the kind. I can’t be 100% certain, but I’d guess they were on the lower level of those she uses regularly to deal with people. The lowest can’t take humanoid forms and the highest go beyond it. This guy was fully physical and the parts all fit together.”

Courtney sighs, “Well, here’s hoping this actually handles things. You’ve spent more than enough time on it.”

Jason, “Eh, I would be willing to spend twice as much as long as it works. Though I have to ask, how do normal people handle this? I mean, not everyone has a connection to a deity in their back pocket.”

Courtney, “Money might not be the only thing making the world go round anymore, but it certainly can add a spin. Besides, the kind of people who would have optimizations and altered their experience gains are mostly going to be people like me and Rosha. The servants and those they serve from the ‘powers that be’ irl.

“In particular, more on the servants’ side of things because there’s a reason the System works like it does. The default balance is actually pretty good at making people powerful, barring the matter of gaining more stat points. So most of the rich will simply aim for that instead of adjusting how fast or slow they level because of experience filtering. None of that matters anyway, if you’re just going to be caught at a bottleneck. And there is always a bottleneck, even if that simply means the very last one.”

Jason sighs, “I’m guessing you also have a better experience if you have to use the tech support.”

Courtney laughs, “Oh goodness no! That’s equally bad for everyone. The company tries to hide how little control they have over NeoRealm and part of that is forcing everyone to go through horrible tech support. After all, the best way to handle it would be to just raise it to the System.

“Except that would make them look weak and they’d prefer it incompetent over weak. Tech support will run you in circles just to avoid admitting they can’t actually do something. Though I guess the rich do have one leg up. They can easily pay someone to stay on hold for them.”
