[NR] Calling For Help - Chapter 733

Jason is settled in his cabin, preparing to call out for assistance.

This is not the first time. He had been attempting this for about three hours a day over the last week. And sadly this time wasn’t any different.

He mediated and called out to Starlight for their assistance. No answer, though Jason still felt this had a better chance to succeed than trying to talk directly to the System would.

Oh, and he did try the in-game help first. That went through the System, only being elevated to a person or managing entity if the System decided that was needed. So, of course, his inquiry isn’t answered at all.

If anything, the mental tempering from regular meditation is worth it and so Jason maintained this habit for another week and a half before he finally got results. Well, partial results which is better than nothing and opened up a path forward.

Jason is sitting in the middle of his room, meditating by way of a mantra. Admittedly, most mantras have more meaning to them. Even those asking other entities to intercede for you will tend to have inherent meaning beyond the message. Thankfully, that isn’t actually required and even some traditional mantras in how old life were simply phrases that flowed well.

Starlight, oh the gentle light. Your assistance I need for my latest plight.

When Jason first came up with it, he felt it was a bit cheesy. Almost as if he was supposed to shout it out loud and then get transformed into some sort of superhero. Still, it got the point across and had a pleasant flow to it, which is all Jason needed. If things worked at all like he expected, the needed details for his situation would either be carried by his intent while repeating the phrase or Starlight simply taking a look at what had happened around him recently. If she didn’t already know.

It could be hard to tell with powerful entities. What is known and unknown to them is hard to pin down and more based on how much their mind can handle. Most easily seen with how everyone is worried about saying the name of powerful beings. At a certain point, even that is enough to provide said entity with a view on what is happening where you are.

Clearly, either Starlight wasn’t at that level or was popular to call on. Jason is willing to side more on the second option. Not that he figured she was called by Starlight. Rather, as an intermediary of the System, she likely had an official identity as some deity, maybe more than one.

Whatever the case, his partial results are more than enough. About two-thirds of the way through his meditation session, the room went bright. A little too bright, more theatrical than practical.

Jason stopped his meditation and looked up and snorted. Yep, the roof seemingly no longer there, looking up upon a night sky lit up by much too bright stars. And at the center of it all, not Starlight, but some angelic being.

Though in this case, Jason was using “angelic” in the more old-school fashion. Not to mean beautiful, but rather similar to an angel. Maybe an actual angel. Jason just doubted Starlight is an actual Deity and so this minion, while similar, would not be a true angel.

Whatever the case, this being wearing a human appearance through which the otherworldly peaked out and triggered all of those uncanny valley vibes, slowly descended into the room. Jason felt the need to bow down and avert his eyes from the being.

Or rather, Jason felt the need being inserted into him from an outside source. It is beyond him to determine whether this was purposeful or passive, but having recognized it for what it is, ignored the feeling. Instead, he took the time to observe this angelic. Man?

Their eyes are closed, though it was hard to tell as instead of flesh and blood eyes, they had a silvery metal visor hovering in front of a blank section of flesh. And not just in a “his eyes are gone” sort of way, but rather from what Jason could see, the bone structure is likely such that there never was meant to be physical eyes there in the first place. Instead, on the silver visor are two representations of closed eyes. Though with how they twitched minutely, Jason assumed they would open and act as if they were real eyes.

Then after that strangeness, the rest of the being’s head was normal enough. Though their hair is black, which offset their general theme of silver. The hair didn’t even have silver accents or anything.

Their neck and upper body was covered by wings. Not from their back, or at least not attached physically to their back. Rather, the pair of silver wings being used to cover them, floated freely, positioned in such a way as to block specifically Jason’s view of the being. Though Jason could also tell that there was some perception-based nonsense going on and that likely, anyone viewing them would feel the same way.

Though their arms were uncovered, at least by external things. Instead, the near-human arms and hands are inscribed with silver lines. Maybe runes, maybe text. Whatever it was, the inscribed lines are so tightly packed that it takes genuine effort for Jason to even see that the arm’s skin matches their face instead of just being made of silver.

Then their lower body was covered entirely in what is basically a floor-length skirt? Jason is sure there’s some more proper name for the article of clothing, but can’t think of it off the top of his head. Anyway, said article of clothing is made for white fabric, though matching the theme, the hems are done with silver thread. Though oddly enough, there isn’t anything embroidered on the fabric.

Overall, Jason would rate them six out of ten for humanoid angels and three out of ten for angels as a whole. During his time watching his friend, the hero from the afterlife, he had experienced more than a few true angels and this one didn’t stand out overly much.
