[NR] A Talk With Jenny's Boss And His Boss - Chapter 595
Added 2024-05-01 10:00:13 +0000 UTCBack with Jenny, she is forced to shift over to her original personal VR room. After all, her son, Jason, is very much the center of attention right now and she had just chatted with him. Even going so far as to obfuscate part of the conversation. Nevermind the fact her boss’s boss had requested that she ask a question of him. Though only requested, even if everyone understood that turning the request down had many penalties attached.
Once in the room, she takes a moment to glance around; the area styled like an old school office in a skyscraper, then accepts the five requests for entry. With that, her boss, his boss, and three figures obscured in shadows arrived. The two managers seated themselves across from her at the desk while the three observers took a step back and did their best to fade into the background.
Jenny’s boss nervously shuffles a small stack of papers he arrived with. “So, you had your private conversation and even obfuscated things. Some believed that you informing the subject of the need to cover his mouth was going too far. However, I have covered for you.
“We both know this isn’t the first time you’ve used such things around him and in the end, it is better for you to inform him out loud. At least, compared to him doing so without your instructions. Now, what have you found out?”
Jenny resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Covered for her? More like they wanted her to feel a connection with him and maybe think of him as the “good cop” in the situation.
Jenny, “Unfortunately, when I asked him about the incident, he professed ignorance and I believe him. Our chat after that showed he was doing something. However, from what he did say it was not related to the formation of the exclusion zone.
“Even if he is the cause, he does not know of what happened and any further questions would likely not be able to pinpoint the how. At least not without revealing information we are not at liberty to share with him. At best, next time I can ask specifically what he was doing at the time of the event. However, going by what was visible on the interior camera, he may not be able to pinpoint the exact moment it happened.”
The boss’s boss frowned, “Was that really all you found out? We analyzed the recordings of your meeting and know he revealed something.”
Jenny shrugs, “Yes, he did reveal something, but it was about his NeoRealm character. If you accept the usual privacy agreement on shared character data, I can reveal the information.”
Now, Jenny would have preferred not to reveal anything, but that wasn’t an option. So instead, revealing information that would normally secret even if Jason didn’t particularly care if it was revealed, would provide a suitable cover. And so after she got confirmation that everyone in the room had signed the privacy agreement Jenny started talking.
Jenny, “My son has always been fascinated with eastern stories about cultivation. I have more than enough permission slips from when he was younger and wanted to read more about it. So, it did not surprise me when he revealed that he had decided to base his character around cultivation.”
Her boss frowned, “Our observation of how you acted revealed quite a bit of surprise. Could you explain this, please?”
Jenny nodded, “While it is true that I was not surprised that he had chosen to try his hand at cultivation. I was surprised when he revealed how. He is an Energy user, having chosen the hard road over Mana and Qi.”
Her boss’s frown deepens, “Such a path becomes harder by the day. How was he able to even start on it? The System is doing everything it can within the rules to prevent people from gaining Energy.”
Jenny, “Unless I ask more pointed questions, there is no way to know.”
Her boss’s boss sighs, “He likely just lucked into a tutor at his tutorial town. The System has less control in those areas, if only because the original parameters were much tighter there. Not that we need to care about another low level Energy user.
“He might not even keep it till level 100. Once he beats that bottleneck, then it will matter. Most Energy using players either drop it or get contaminated by one of the other powers before it gets locked in.”
In the background, one of the shadows coughs.
Both bosses grimace and Jenny’s direct boss begins to go through the papers he is holding.
With a cough of his own, Jenny’s boss peaks up again. “So, uh, as we were just reminded, we need to talk about your apartment. At this point, besides those who don’t care about simple wealth, basically everyone else within your block has signed an NDA and moved to a new location. Will you release your apartment to us?”
Jenny squints at him, “Everyone here already knows my answer. If you try to force the issue or retaliate, not only will I sue the company, but if I did end up selling, it would be to a competitor. Don’t test me. We both know the company just wants the rights to my apartment as an investment.
“Any research that needs done can easily be done even a couple apartments over. The exclusion zone is an area free of those powers, not an area of lower density. I’ve even allowed a few field researchers access to the living room for half a day. There was nothing to be found.”
Her boss raises his hands, “Woah there! No one is going to force anything. We don’t understand why you’re so attached to this specific apartment. So for now, we’ll drop the issue. Just know that the offer still stands. The company is even willing to offer a higher class apartment.”
Jenny shakes her head, “I didn’t expect you to understand. As for the better apartment? You’re my boss. It should be clear to you that if I wanted to, I could move to such an apartment at any time. So, since that’s everything, are we good to wrap up?”
Her boss pauses, but one of the shadows in the background coughs again, causing him to quickly agree. Then all five of the visitors left.
